Baby Ripple Progress

So this is day 2 of the baby ripple. I didn't work too hard on it yesturday as a few other WIP had stolen my attention. I also noticed how many PIGS I have ... scary thought! I have a horrible problem starting projects... then getting bored or lose my attention to another project.

I'm really starting to like these colors stacked up next to eachother. It's so different seeing them like this, compared to all for being used at once. Such as in this blanket that I made a few weeks ago. I used the exact same
yarns, and yet for some reason.. the colors look different.

I started thinking today about doing a baby hat to go along with this blanket. I'm thinking of trying to do it in a ripple *of course* similar to the round ripple blankets I've seen a few of you do. I'm thinking I would just stop doing the increases and that should turn it into hat form. Any help with this would be great. Since I'm still a newbie at the ripples, the round pattern may be a bit tricky at first.

A quick question for you all: How many WIP do you have going at once, besides your ripple?

Progress

I've made some progress on my ripple afghan. I have used each color once, and now I intend to repeat the stripe pattern as established 2 or 3 times more. I think if I continue to add colors randomly, the afghan will just look too busy. Besides that, I am really pleased with the stripe pattern I already have.

I did start the next color change, using the rose color again, Monday night. I got to almost the end of the second row, only to discover that I had made a mistake in the row below. So I need to frog almost 2 entire rows! I haven't had the heart to do it yet, but I will try to do it tonight. As we used to say in graduate school, "Nothing to it but to do it"!

Another new Ripple in the pond

Hi, I'm Agate. I've been following the ripple along since it was announced on the CrochetMe blog. I even started my own and I am really liking it, so I decided I'd go ahead and join.

I don't know why, but my pictures won't download. I haven't had a problem on my own blog, so if you wanna see a picture of my ripple right now it is here. I'll try to get it onto here another time. I've already tried twice today.

Most of my yarn is Red Heart acrylic, a couple skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease, and yarn from a purchased sweater I ripped apart. It is a mix of reds, browns, burgandys and a couple vareigated yarns. I think the colors are really nice together and a sunny yellow keeps it from being to dark. I didn't buy any new yarn for it, this is entirely from my stash. I am using a K hook.

I am using the lacy chevron pattern from Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet. I had to make one change to it though. The book says to make a 3 stitch turning chain and my sides were becoming warped and tight. I crochet very tight already, so I added a ch to the turning chain and it seems to be working better. It's not a wide blanket and I will probably have to add a border in order to make it a little wider, but that's okay, I tend to lose interest in blankets when I make them, shorter rows might stave that off for awhile.

I do want to finish this one though, I think it will look great on my bed.

since i've vowed to only use yarn that i already had, i'm going through some ugly spots, but i'm not frogging. i'm also afraid that i may run out of yarn. i'll worry about that when i get there.

Still Rippling

Here's my progress on the ripple blanket I am crocheting for my niece. I'm about to start another block of turquoise and I can't decide if I should do it the same as before or change it.

Someone asked in a previous post if anyone was using a special crochet hook. I'm not using one (I actually lost my Clover Soft Touch! *sob* I loved that hook so much I had to order another one) but I went through a stash of needles I recently inherited from my Great Aunt and Grandmother who were both needleworkers (a knitter and a crocheter, Grammie taught me to crochet when I was a teenager) and found amongst the plastic and aluminum hooks a tiny bone crochet hook and a hand made wooden crochet hook that I think belonged to my Great Grandmother on that side of the family. I want to use one of those hooks to make something after I'm done with this afghan.

P.S. Do knit ripples count too? If so, I am making some rippled squares for one of these in between my crochet ripples!

I Might Run Out of Yarn

Zoiks! I just looked in the bag that holds my ripple yarn, and it's way less than half full. I might have to take a break or slow down a bit to let my odd ball acquisition catch up.

Still, I'm really happy with this blanket. All of my light colours could pass for grey, which gives the whole thing a sort of subdued feel. Far less crisp than if I were using some creams or whites.

Charity Baby Blanket

Progress is slow with single crochet, a 4.5mm hook and baby yarn. Here's as far as I've gotten:

Insert Ripple Here

I was already working on a sweater for my second-grader. He rifled through my stash for soft red yarns, plus he requires that I work in this white Nashua Handknits mohair than you see in the pic. It looks like a snowball and my son has been captivated by it for months. I only have ONE skein of it.
Then this whole Ripple-Along phenomenon happens and becomes a consciousness-raising experience for me. When I return to this sweater, I ask you: how can I not add a ripple midway through?
I learned (during this National Crochet Month) that when you have a ripple stitch pattern that begins and ends with a straight edge (instead of ripply), you can insert a row of ripples anywhere, anytime, for some ARV (Added Ripple Value).
By the way, I changed the photo of my "Chunky Bobbly Happiness" entry to something more.... poetic. And Stasia, I can't reply to your Blogger email addy but I would love to take you up on your offer of help.

Baby Ripples

Because I can't seem to have less than 10 projects going at a time. And the urge to start an actual ripple blanket. I looked at my 2 38-gallon totes that hold my yarn and found a large stash left over from a recent blanket. *A 4 strand speed hook child's blanket, made with pound of love yarns* I still had about half of each skein left, along with another of a baby yarn that was used to make a girls sleeper set *pictures on my blog if interested* So I decided to make a smaller ripple and start off easy. So this one is 96 long, and so far... will consist of 4 main colors and an edging color. The blanket under my ripple is my daughters play blanket made out of the 4 strands and done on speed stix *knit*

I have another scrap ball of yarn, similar to the edging one... just a lighter weight that may go inbetween every 4 colors... but we'll see how that goes. Right now I am planning on 3 rows per color with 4 colors to the patterns. But that could change. I also haven't quite decided on the owner of the blanket once done. It may just be a stock blanket just in case or will be added to my shop.

Oh, the lovely

I have a deep and probably unhealthy love for my ripple. My husband and I have a cabin in West Virginia, which is where I keep most of my scrap yarn. I wasn't expecting much when I opened the bin, but oh boy have I found the mother lode. It's a full-to-bursting bin of fun colors. Woo-hoo!

The ripple now goes about a third of the way up my queen-size bed.

Sentimental Crochet Hooks

I began my ripple with my special crochet hook from my Grandma Eva, found it felt weird to hold, switched to a steel size E, but have tonight returned to the old hook. I just love it so much, and am going to try to get used to the feel. I posted pictures of these hooks on my blog. Does anyone else have a special hook they're working with? I know someone did mention also using one from their grandma. Anyway, it's nice to think that my Bubbe is rippling along with me. I'm sure she would have enjoyed this!

Hey y'all, from Down Under

I'm a South Carolinian (a Charleston girl) living in Sydney, Australia, so it's great to see how many people from all over are a part of this thang.

I got to start my ripple blanket on Friday night and so as of day 4 I've got this far:(Sorry about the pic, it was dark when I took the pic and I was wanting to get this put up here! I'll take more pics in daylight.)

I'm working with Filatura di Crosa Zara, and it's absolutely delicious. It so rocks to work at a yarn store! The colours are just singing "tiptoe through the tulips"! I'm using a 5.00mm, size H. I haven't even got to the spring green and cream, and I'm just so excited about it. If it wasn't so darn relaxing to do, I'd be dancing around the house with it. I'm also going to be trying to post about it on my blog, but I'm a bit lazy about it.

I was going to post about how this little boy of mine spilt cranberry juice all over my rippler on Saturday night and I missed a whole day and a half of rippling while waiting for it to dry after rinsing it. But then he broke his arm yesterday and has spent the whole day cosied under it watching cartoons. No, it's not finished yet and there is a live loop in there somewhere which is probably unravelling, but I can't say no to him, poor little love.

Hello! I have missed posting pictures, but have worked pretty steadily on the blankie. I fixed some abnormalities with the ending edge, and am thinking about doing some sort of edging around the whole thing after it's done, just to pull everything together. what are you all doing about the edges?

So far I have 20 stripes done on my ripple afghan. Here it is:

I only have a few new colors to introduce, then you and I will see more of the same. Already there are doubles of some colors - those balls of yarn that I had purchased 2 balls instead of 1 (1 ball = 3 stripes, 2 balls = 6 stripes). I think it will give the eye something to rest on. Most of the doubled colors are the palest of each group of colors pink through red, blues, greens, yellows, but I have 4 colors of orange into brown and white into tan, so I didn’t double up there. I chose the red to double instead of the pink, because I like red.

I went up to a bigger crochet hook (5/F) and it is working much better as the hook on the 4/E was too small with the yarn being so splity. I am still getting the same gauge so that is really good too.

Kati is visiting right now and has declared her blanket to be "pretty". Whew. Makes a gran's heart glad. I measured last night and have completed 33½" of roughly 80". I keep thinking of Easter baskets and bunnies as I crochet with these colors. The lavender should be perfect in her little girl bedroom.

New to the ripple obsession

There it is... my very first successful ripple. And I'm actually quite happy with how it turned how considering I made it late at night after a long LONG day.

So, my laptop was in the shop for a week, so I haven't been able to update. Got a few more stripes done, then I ran out of yarn.... the gods are conspiring this week. Anyway, I will post an updated pic soon. Just didn't want anyone to think I had disappeared....

Colors...

I loved my heap of colors, but each new ripple brings a bit of aesthetic confusion...

My first ripple stitch blancket

I like, as certainly everyone does, Posie gets cosy's blanket. Its colors. And I would know how she could do it because I really don't know how it could be possible to make a wave with a crochet. I didn't see that here in France. So, I tried again and again and since last wednesday I made this :

Finally updated...inching along

Although I have doubled my rows from last time I still feel like I'm just creeping along very slowly. I'm also running out of color options so i'm hoping to go yarn-shoping tom. (yay!) Here it is in all its glorious 14 rows(which comes out to be 3109 dc stiches lol)

I'm preeety pod'd

The ripple blanket is stalled, simply because I’m pod with it. I made so many mistakes due to trying to balance the weights of different clashing colours, it messed everything up. I found a simple way to solve these problems, which didn’t result in ripping. So, all is well, but I’m giving our relationship some breathing room, or I might be sorely tempted to dispose of it in the most shredding way possible.
Btw, how can I join the flickr group? I couldn't find the join thingy in the discussion page...
And I know squat about french. I'm good for portuguese, spanish, some italian and some catalan, and english of course, but that's it...

Thanks for letting me play. I love the looks of ripples and I am definitely inspired by what I see here.

Yesterday, I messed around with the ripple patterns I have on hand. This one is the classic ripple pattern from Diana Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet. This is the pattern I'm leaning toward. I'm waiting on a new pattern book before I commit to it though. My plan is to use up stash and be a bit reckless color wise to challenge myself. I made the swatch in my favorite colors.



I hope to keep updates on my blog as well. I have been a bad blogger lately.

since my last update, i've added a few more stripes. unfortunately for every 2 rows i get done, i end up frogging one because i've been making mistakes in the pattern. it's not a difficult pattern and yet my hands have been betraying me. bad hands!

I finally received my book from Amazon yesterday, and I was so excited to get started! I'm using worsted weight acrylic and a size J crochet hook for the "Soft Waves" pattern. I'm not sure if I like it, but I figure I'll ripple along awhile and see if I get used to it. Here is my start:

Hi Ripplers,

Tonight I've been contemplating my Ripple ingredients--some stashed and some new Rowan Cotton Glace--and trying out different widths for my afghan. I think I'm now on the move! I love all of the colors and variations I'm seeing from everyone, and can't wait to see mine progress. It's really impossible to tell what it'll turn into, right? I guess the mystery is part of the appeal... my only disappointment so far is that I had to switch from a lovely vintage crochet hook of my grandma's (which was kind of uncomfortable to hold) to a plain old steel one...well, so be it!

Here's my gang of colors:

oh, it's just a wee bit more than i can bear!

Sat down with my ripple this afternoon and realized that when I last ripped the colors I wasn't happy with, well, somehow I ended up adding a stitch to one side. And you know how you don't necessarily notice a small flaw until it's get magnified by duplicating it over and over again? Well, about 15 rows later, one edge has a definite list.

Oh the agony! I'M GOING TO HAVE TO FROG IT BACK AGAIN!

I couldn't bear to take pictures. It's too painful.

Wanted you all to know I'll be a mite shy about here the next few days. Offspring #1 turns 6 tomorrow and the in-laws are coming in for the festivities. Will check in as I'm able. If there are newbies looking for help or to join, I'm confident you all will point them in the right direction.

Comfortable

I was thinking about my ripple afghan and how nicely homey/homely it is. Each color seems to stand out, especially when there is only one row. Then with two rows it starts to blend. It is almost like magic. Maybe it is because I become accustomed to them after a bit, and then they aren't so jarring after all. Then the process starts all over again with the next new color. Life as afghan. *grin*

I love all the colors so much that I can't bring myself to just carry along the few I will be working with - they have to be all together in a big baglady bag, or like a traveling circus.



After I had a few stripes done I realized that I am recreating a yet-to-be-created-planned-but-not-even-started quilt done up in 30s/40s prints.



I am really loving it!

I Needed To Use A Different Chair

Ripples Reach Seoul!

Hello, everyone! I'm another newbie--to crocheting, and to joining Internet communities. This whole ripple-along thing is so powerful, it has got me to pick up a crochet hook and learn for the first time, and it has also brought me out of my long-standing lurker status to actually pipe up and add my two cents' worth! Heady stuff, I tell ya!

Anyway, I am from Canada originally, but I now call Korea home. I have been teaching English here for 8 years, and am loving it. I've been knitting a blanket in fits and spurts for almost that whole time, and it's about 80% done, but once I saw this ripple-along blog, I knew I had to do something about it...I'll finish the knitting later!

So, last Friday, I was passing by a little yarn shop in the subway station near work, and I decided all of a sudden to just pick up some yarn and start. Not the most thought-out plan, because the yarn is actually kind of cheap, and sold in really small amounts, so it's not the most economical way--but I consider this my "practice" blanket. I plan on going to the yarn wholesale market here in Seoul and making a nicer one with softer, natural yarns later. So for now, I'm having tons of fun with this one, even though it's not nearly as nice as all the other fantastic, beautiful blankets on this blog. I'm in awe of you all!

So here are a couple of pictures to show you what I've done. I started this blanket on Monday, and have been working at it obsessively since then. This is what it looked like on Wednesday morning (I got my 11 am Reading/Writing class to model it with me):

Back At It

I can't believe I forgot to blog here yesterday, even after I put my photos on Flickr. Der. So here, on Day 10, is my Day 9 progress. I did go a full day without rippling a couple of days ago, and I hated it. Mustn't do that again.

The yarn in the photo is Elsbeth Lavold Silky Wool. It's slightly lighter in weight than all the other yarns, but it worked out beautifully. That stretch of the blanket is becoming quite colourful. More updates soon!

Chunky Bobbly Happiness

Hi ripply folks, here's my thirsty cotton accessory for the espresso machine that my husband gave me for my birthday. Espresso making requires a lot of wiping and soaking up and buffing. This single crochet-based ripple towel is up for the job.

I shopped for ripple patterns in Jean Leinhauser's 101 Ripple Stitches to Knit and Crochet (1997). There are plenty more in that book that I want to try after I finish this one.

Today I put a Ripple-Along button on my blog and I managed to make it show up, but I don't know how to make it clickable. Can anyone help me with that part?

Just can't get enough-

Okay, so my real ripple blanket is getting to big for me to work on on-the-go, and too hot to work under during the day. I've added several rows but decided that I'm going to update that one weekly, so you will all just have to wait ;-)

I started a second blanket because I needed a travel project and because I've been itching to do something with this "Crazy daisy" yarn that I picked up on clearance and because I wanted to see how the ripple pattern turns out with a textured yarn. . . and yeah I have zero attention span.

I decided to make a doll blanket for my niece, but I'm really liking how this is turning out so I might just keep it.

I'm using 3 colors of crazy daisy and alternating them with two colors of cotton tots. I like the color combo and the cotton gives it stability and makes the fussy crazy daisy easier to work with. I'm only doing single rows of each and I think it has a nice chenille texture.

Another Free Pattern

Several people asked which pattern I was using. I found this one on the internet and liked the way it looked, plus it was very easy to learn!

Not much progress

Just as I started on my ripple throw my toddler started to cut her last two back teeth so I've not really done much in the last week or so. My lap and hands are taken up by cuddling and reading stories most of the time, not wielding wool and a hook, but I have managed to do a few rows:

I think it is going to be a very dark throw although I haven't started a cream stripe yet so a few more of those, plus the lemon, may lighten it up as I go along. I've also opted to weave in my ends as I go to save myself one less boring job at the end, as I know I won't want to be faced with all that when I finish the throw.

my ripples are limping along...

I'm happy with the way my ripples look but this is the largest crochet project I've ever attempted so my progress seems slow. I'm averaging 1-2 ripples per day so I think I'll be rippling for a month or two. But I am happy with the look of it so far and I love looking at everyone else's creations as well. I also like reading about what kind of yarn people chose for this. I'm using superwash dk wools - Debbie Bliss Merino dk, Rowan Pure Wool dk and Jaeger Matchmaker dk. I think my next ripple blanket is going to be in the much more value priced Caron Simply Soft Brites because I am in love with Oiyi's ripple blanket :-)

another newbie

Hi there - I just started mine yesterday, after ripping out only once, I settled on a bit of a chevron, although I like the soft wave style better.

My mum gave me a big bag of baby yarns which I didn't know what to do with, so I have started a baby blanket which I'll give the the charity gift shop at the Children's Hospital. Here's one day's progress:

I have no idea where my colours are going and what type of pattern will emerge.

I was hesitant to start because I had stashed so well, I wasn't sure where all my little bits were, but isn't it funny that when you start looking, they seem to pop up all over the place?

Chocolate & Turquoise

I've been coerced into making an afghan for my teenage niece. My mother told said niece after she commented on how she wanted a blanket at the end of her bed like Grammie has because her feet get cold too that Auntie Jill loves to knit and maybe she'll make you a blanket for your bed. The next time my niece saw my Mum she said to her "I can't wait to get my blanket from Auntie Jill, I'm so excited!" And the requested colors were chocolate brown and turquoise. So, here I am in the Ripple A Long. I moaned and b*tched about having to drop everything and make this blanket but was so inspired by all of the ripple afghans I have seen over the last couple of weeks, I couldn't help but crochet one as well. You are evil temptresses and are probably in collusion with my mother!

I have to admit that it's nice to crochet and I haven't done any serious crocheting in a few years. I'm using Encore yarn in the worsted weight mainly because it's machine wash and dry and it's what I use when making things for my nieces and little siblings.

My hands are claws. I'm running out of color options. And I just can't stop rippling.

Here we are after day 1:

And finally last night:

I've used a boatload of Red Heart, one stripe of worsted weight cotton, some Lamb's Pride wool, and that last purple stripe on the left is a big fluffy boucle that was a pain to ripple with but which I love the feel of.

It's 300 stitches across, and each stripe takes about an hour. But it's now big enough to fit over me! It's keeping me warm ... woo-hoo!

I've been trying to make sure that each stripe fits, colorwise, with the one before. I've found that trying to plan the colors is impossible. The color I think I'm going to use next inevitably gets put aside for some other inspiration that hits at the last minute.

I love the ripple. And I love seeing everyone else's ripples! I still think everybody else has better colors than me.

I've only been working on it a bit at a time so i've only gotten this far (which is surprising because it goes so fast!)
at first, i was a little worried about using different textures of yarn but now i kinda like it. the thicker yarn is a bit more raised and adds a little bit of something to it. i'm choosing my colors as i go so it will be just a little bit random. i'm looking at ends to be woven in on mine and well, one big *sigh*.
i'm working over them but there are skipped stitches so i don't want the yarn to wind up hanging out after watching. every one else's looks so darn neat and perty!

Hey all. I'm in Maine at the moment, visiting my sister for a week. The blankie has grown but I haven't figured out how to get pictures up on here from a different computer so you'll have to imagine: lots of light yellow, bright yellow, and a creamsicle orange that looks almost like pink next to all of it. There's a bit of the lime green and a dark purple for some pop. I started over after doing a little bit in SC's and being dissatisfied. Now it's half-doubles, a bigger hook, and so much softer! yay! photos to come soon...

best thing about maine is the proliferation of local yarn emporiums. Praying for some hermit-time to fully immerse myself in fibers. They know how to do wool up here.

anyone having weird issues with your edges, like when you get to the end of a row? Like it started with the wave going down, and now somehow the wave is on the crest? just curious, 'cause I'm not ripping it this time.

A Can of Worms

Ok, kids. There's a reason I spent the last three years tinkering on the internet. It's, um, obsession.

I'm finally feeling a lot better, and am consequently catching up on nearly two weeks' worth of neglected work. Yesterday was the first day since I started that I didn't touch my ripple.

But what did I do today? I read Alicia's blog, of course. And what's she spent the last few days making? Breathtaking granny squares. And what have I wanted to do with the yarn leftover from my ripple? Make granny squares, of course.

A gentle word about patterns...

I was hoping to not have to do this, but here we go.

We've received several comments asking for patterns from the 200 stitch book to be emailed directly to people. The material in the book is covered under copyright laws, so I have been choosing to not post those comments. I'm hoping you're understanding and respect that.

(I'm currently moderating comments to hopefully keep us spam-free, so anything from a non-member gets sent to me before being posted, so to this point I've caught them. However, anything from a blog member is posted without my review.)

Trust me when I say I totally understand not being able to run out and buy a new book every time you want to, but I would still ask you all to please respect copyrighted materials and the designers that work hard to provide them. Finished Baby Ripple

I never showed my finished baby blanket. I think this is going to our next grandbaby, due this summer. It was fun and relatively quick. I used mainly Bernat Softee Baby Yarn which is sport weight. A slightly large hook and my own loose tension made it extra soft and drapeable which is always something I try to achieve.

Purple Ripple Blanket

Hello everyone. I'm Jennie an english girl living in Sweden.

I started my ripple blanket awhile ago when I first saw Alicia's.

I haven't gotten very far on it as I usually only crochet while watching tv in the evenings.

This is my first ripple blanket, I still consider myself a newbie at crocheting.

The blanket is going in my pale purple bedroom, it's about 150cm wide

I figured I'd use up my purple & creamy coloured yarns, so I don't know how long it will be, if it's turns out being just a foot blanket that's fine by me :)

So pleased to find a bunch of other people rippling happily along. This is my blanket attempt 2. I got a bit carried away with the first one and it was too wide for our king sized bed and just used up too much yarn per row. So after it had grown to about 10 inches I pulled it all apart and started again. This one is more of a twin sized blanket. Much better. And I am really using mostly scraps for it. I am a pure wool fiend, but I did have 2 balls of acrylic blend which I've hidden away in there. There is also some alpaca and alpaca/wool blend. I'm using all different weights of wool, so the ripples feel kind of bumpy too, and I'm not sticking to a two row per colour pattern either...it's just as the mood takes me and quite random. I am trying to stick to a colour palette though...it's mostly blues and greys with some punches of pinks, yellows and reds. I have some lovely sage green, but I am concerned that it will just be too many colours then. You may also notice that my ripples got a bit out of whack in the first 10 colour changes, but I don't think that it's too noticeable...and I am NOT starting again (again).. Looking forward to seeing everyone else's rippling as they progress.

Help with my Sample

Hello Everyone. Above is my small sample of the "Pink Wave" pattern in Jan Eaton's book "200 Ripple Stitch Patterns". It really is a lovely book. Since I have not crocheted for about 30 years or more, and have NEVER followed a crochet pattern, I have a few questions. As you can see from my sample, I did several multiples of my 17 chain +2 pattern. My concern is the bottom original chain row. As you can see it pulls very badly and seems much smaller than the above developing pattern. Do I just need to start my original chain row MUCH LOOSER???? I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Everyone's blankets are looking so wonderful and I can't wait to start, but wanted to be sure I had the technique and process down correctly. Also, I wanted the width to be about 74 inches, so plan to use my "stitches per inch" but make sure the final count is in my multiples of 17. Is that all correct??? How wonderful to have this resource available. Thanks so much.
