i've gotten several emails asking for some specs, so here goes. i'm using knitpicks merino style and andean treasure and a size USH/5.00 mm hook. i like my crochet fabric to be nice and drapey. and the stitch i'm using is softwaves from 200 ripple stitches by jan eaton.

I saw your earlier post about trying to adapt the soft waves ripple into a round pattern. It was like you put a bug in my brain. I don't know how to use schematics so I just picked up my hook and some yarn and fiddled until I was satisfied. Here is what I came up with and the colors I'm planning to use to make it after I finish my current round ripple.




I don't know how to write the pattern out, but I was hoping you could just look at my picture and tell what I did. What I can tell you is that you can follow a round ripple pattern like this one for the first five rounds to set up the ripple pattern, then to set up the soft waves, you would work 6 dc in the ch 2 space for the peak and 2dctog, 2dctog for the valley in round 6. For round 7 you would work 3dc in each of the top two dc sts (peak), then dc in next st, 2dctog, 2dctog (valley), dc in next st.
The secret, I think is working 3dc in each of the top two dc sts in the peak. You will see that the increases will happen naturally because on each subsequent round you will have an extra dc st between the peaks and valleys. I'm currently on round 12 and have 5 dc sts between the peaks and valleys. This is probably all clear as mud. Sorry about that. Just wanted to show you that it can be done! Well, howdy!

My name is Deb. I post mainly on my homemaking blog, Try-Hard Homemaker, but I am just about tickled purple to have been invited (invited myself ;) ) to participate here! I am a knitter from way back, converted to a quilter, and now, well dang it, I'm addicted to crochet. Okay, I admit it, I am a hardcore craft addict. :D

This is my first crochet effort. I have dabbled a little, here and there, but this will be the first time I have actually *crocheted something*. It is going swimmingly, but I attribute that mainly to a high level of general craft literacy.

Am I the only person here who is using yarn purchased from their local grocery store? :D Honestly, I have four small children; I'd probably have to sell one of them to be able to buy the yarns that some of you are using! My yarn is a *lovely*, cheap, acrylic 8-ply...I cut the grocery budget short to be able to buy it (just kidding...). But, it works.

I didn't get that much done this week, only about 10 more rows. I tried to take a better picture though, this is outside on my deck and I think the colors are much more accurate.

Baby Ripple

Hi Everyone! I like you-all was so inspired by Jane's and Alicia's original ripples! I am so enjoying seeing everyone's different colors and stitches here!

I've been having this knitting tangent, very frustrating, something about crochet is just more "me". So what a wonderful way to "come back". :-)

I had these yarns leftover from other baby blanket projects, and one my daughter picked out. They are LB Pound of Love in white, TLC Essentials in bambi (pastels), and a RH 'something' in the lavender & pink shades.

Being a not-very-random kinda gal, I chose to alternate the colors in an A B A C pattern, which will work well with the amounts of each yarn I have too.

I have two other batches of yarn that have been "nagging" me that will work perfectly for larger blankets. One of Woolease in neutrals/classic colors, and another of eBay wools in some rather pretty colors that I think look beautiful together. Now I just need to figure out if there is enought there for a twin and a queen size blanket.

I am so excited to be a part of this ripple-along! i love to ripple and have a couple of FO already to show you all! These two baby blankets i made when my best friend was pregnant. she decided not to find out the sex so i made one of each, one for a boy and one for a girl! she ended up having a boy so the blue one went to her! i still have the pink one....it looks like an ice cream sundae! The original pattern is from the Candy Blankets book by Candi Jensen. i am currently working on another one in blues, greens, and purples and will post pictures soon! thanks for letting me ripple along with you all!

I'm In...Here is my Ripple

Thank you so much Dawn for the invite! I needed this boost to get my hooks out. I have been crocheting since I was 7 yrs old - many years ago - and knitting for the past 9 years . So it was time to remember what I loved so much about crocheting (it is so much faster)!

Here is my afghan from the wavy lapghan link someone posted on this blog.
I had tons of Red Heart yarn in the basement in boxes - so this is what I pulled out. My dad is Cherokee Indian and Portugese so I thought he would appreciate this:

It is on the narrow side - with chain of 110 - but I will add rows of single crochet around the edge when I am done of all the colors - to make it wider.
I already have the makings of a second in my plans - different shades of blue with brown - and twice as wide.

A question for you all

I know ALOT of you have the 200 Ripple stitches pattern book and I was wondering... are they split for the crochet and knit patterns? Or are there more from one than the other? I just started knitting and I'm not to the point of doing ripples on the sticks. And I seem to have the problem with buying a book that has patterns or stitches for both.. and it being mostly knit ones. I'd hate to spend the $20-some for the book and it be mostly knit patterns. No where I've looked says much about this in the book.. so I thought I'd ask you all.

My son's Ribby Ripple

Hi all, this is my first post but I have been lurking and commenting for a while. My name is Lisa and I am brand new to crochet. I started about a month ago. In addition to crocheting, I quilt, sew, knit and whatever else I feel inspired to do. I have a blog that you can visit to see my other "stuff" ( Bird Brain). Without further ado here are the colors my son picked out for his ripple blanket.

Here is my ripple so far. I am doing the "Ribby" pattern (#106) from Jan Eaton's, 200 Ripple stitch patterns. I really enjoy looking at the wonderful creations here.

Oh, if someone could give me some direction as to how to add the Ripple button to my blog I would be very appreciative. I tried for an hour last night and couldn't do it. I have that Junior High feeling that everyone else can do this except me LOL ;)

Finally, some decent light

I haven't been able to post an update lately because all the good natural light leaves the house before I come home from work! I finally got some decent pictures last evening. This one looks like an Easter egg!








I'm 23 stripes in, and I'm guessing it's about half as long as I want it to be, although I haven't yet laid it out on the bed.


Also, I cheated a little bit, as 4 of the last 5 colors I bought in the last week. One day I was upset, so instead of doing something unhealthy, like drinking, I went out and bought yarn. Maybe not so healthy for the checkbook, but much better for me. Then a lot of really nice yarn came up on cheapcycle for $25, complete with a cute basket, so I bought it as well. The last color came from that purchase. It's yellow, orange, pink, and blue variegated, and it reminds me of sherbert.

It's been a long, hard week...

Working at a yarn shop is fun, but it isn't always easy. When I think I'll have room enough to comfortably work on my afghan on the train, I'll take it, but that was only a couple days this week. Any more time I spent on it was once I'd settled down for the night, and that wasn't much. This week has been very busy at the shop, so I'm just exhausted by the time I get home. But after a total of eight days, I've managed to get in 15 stripes.

I didn't mention before that I'm using the soft waves pattern, but I also wanted a "waves on waves" effect, so for the first row of each new color I'm working in the back loop only. It gives it a great extra textural effect. You can see it a little in the pic. I'm enjoying working on this so much. I love the colors, and funnily, it seems to match whatever I'm wearing at the time! More on my blog.

Rippling in Norway

Hi, my name is Hilde C, and I live in Norway. I’ve been reading this blog for a while now, looking at all the wonderful ripples and colours. Now I thought it was about time to participate. I don’t often start huge projects like this, but this one was to tempting to resist, and now I think I’ve got some kind of ripple-fever.
I decided to use colours I associate with autumn, which is a bit odd since I’m constantly thinking of spring nowadays, but that’s just the way it is. I didn’t have enough stash, so I decided to buy yarn instead. I chose Falk from Dale of Norway, which is 100% wool, because this ripple will be used in wintertime. I also chose this yarn because of the colour range, and because I can use a crochet hook number 6.00 mm. I tried using the stripe generator, but we didn’t get along. Now I find that I like the fact that the pattern of colours isn’t decided beforehand. OK, back to my ripple mania :-)

Mandi's Ripple

Hey Y'all! My name is Mandi and I live in NC. I started working on my ripple last Monday. So it's been going for almost two weeks now.
I'm making it for my sons bed, he picked out all the colors (some a little bright for my taste). Right now I'm 15 stripes into it (each stripe is two rows so 30 rows) and I have a long way to go. The blanket measures 85 inches wide, so it will make a nice addition to his full size bed when I get finished with it.
The picture below was taken a few days ago since then I've added 5 more stripes (red, black, burgandy, green and another navy). I will probably update the picture on my blog sometime this weekend if I can get a good picture ( my blog ).
I love working with what the random stripe generator spit out for me! It takes all the thought out of the project for me, and makes this blaket soothing and mindless to work on.

I'm finally getting started about 7 rows completed and lots to go. Not sure about the current green but I'm trying to get used to it.

Hello-y 'Lo Ripplers!

I've been meaning to do this for awhile now, but you know life, it's pesky. I've been popping over to your blogs and websites as I can get to them, and I've seen some fabulous non-ripply stuff I've been meaning to point big neon winking arrows at. Today what I found brought such a huge smile to my face and totally engrossed the wee ones as well that I had to take a minute for show and tell.

Go to Stasia's Blog, Yarn and a Barn and watch the video. Be warned you will want to close up shop and jump to the country. Yep, Stasia has a FARM! With GOATS! And SHEEP! And that means fiber and spinning! Just color me every shade of green you can think of. And she's just a stone's throw from me too. Small world. She has some of her own patterns linked too, check them out.

Hopefully I'll have time to do this every few days. You are all just too fun not to share!

I have the rhythm.

My afghan is humming along now. My son picked the Regatta pattern from Ripple Stitch Patterns, as well as the colors, I wanted him to pick a random pattern as well. I had bits of yarn for him to arrange and tape across a piece of paper. Being the First Grade Mathematician that he is, he created a very clear pattern to repeat. I tried to explain random to him but he was having none of it.
A nice winter storm is beginning and I am looking forward to a weekend of rippling.

I STARTED TO RIPPLE

I finally learned how to ripple after trying out a few different patterns that curled instead of ripple. I'm still at the swatch stage. The pattern that I found was for a pillow and the direction was to cast on 74 stitches and start at the 4th chain so my next challenge is do mulptiple of 74 or 71 because of the beginning 3 chains. Am I making any sense? I guess I just have to try it and check it out for myself.

This is how my ripple blanket looks like 2 days ago.I'm beginning to like my colours better and better now. I realy enjoy working on it a lot.

Oh how slow my ripple does grow

I said I didn't crochet much, I'm abit jealous of everyone else & their blankets as they seem to be growing twice as fast as mine.

Here is what I've done since I last posted, I think I've added about 3 rows, more photos will be on my blog.
Nevermind like I said I only crochet in the evening while watching tv & I haven't done much of that lately, I've been so busy with other projects.

My Friend Ripple

I'm really starting to enjoy my ripple. I'm not sure what did it, but the last few rows have convinced me to just roll with it. I usually like to plan my projects, so it's been fun to just see what colors follow as I go:



I have more yarn on the way to refill the fruit bowl when I'm out. I'm saving some of the lavender for the border.

I'm so glad to be a part of this

After seeing all the marvelous ripples I just had to join in. I've been crocheting ever since I can remember but I can't remember who taught me how. Two of my aunts crochet yet they both say they never showed me how. Maybe they just inspired me to go out and learn.

My ripple is going to be for a child. It's around 45" wide. After looking through the 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns book and swatching several patterns I decided on the Malibu ripple. The yarn is Caron Simply Soft Brites. Most of the colors I had tagged for a different project but I changed my mind. After adding 3 more colors to the mix I'm up to 8. The colors in order of use are Lemonade, Limeade, Blue Mint, Berry Blue, Grape, Watermelon, Papaya, and Mango. I also have some black but I'm not sure if I'm going to use it or not.

Ripple progress

I haven't been able to work on this for a couple of days because I'm knitting a commissioned piece (work before pleasure, unfortunately) but hope to be done with that by tomorrow. My ripple seems to be just humming along and when I'm sitting in my "Big Boy" recliner, it covers me from my toes to under my chin. Can't wait to get back to it!

The frog and the pigs-tress

Baby ripples are no more... A silly and stupid counting error on the 2nd row turned the WIP into a frog project. The wonderful baby colors are now balls again and in a bag waiting for another project. :(

So while digging thru my PIGS I found a bag containing a project I started in the fall... it was supposed to be a christmas present... it didn't make it. That too will soon meet the frog. Some how, I used 2 rather different hooks on it... and only now noticed the fatal mistake. So because I want so bad to ripple, this rather boring treble only blanket will now become a two-tone ripple.

Hopefully pictures will follow either tonight or this weekend of the starting progress.

I took this photo with the blanket spread out on a double bed. It was so nice to have a sunny day! The edges of the blanket hang over the bed a couple of inches on either side and so far I've worked about 23". So I figure I'm just over a quarter of the way done. I'm happy about that - I don't want it to end!

I have been trying and trying to start a ripple and been having trouble, I just can't get the rhythm. I wish the pattern I was following had a chart, I love the charts. Anyway, came on line for some help and found this blog. So cool.

My Mom crocheted and knitted her way through most winters. When one of her children wanted a new blanket she would give us her crochet pattern book and ask what color we wanted. I can't do it that way, I just can't. Neon orange, my Mom once made a neon orange afghan. So, I asked Adam to pick, from my stash, colors that matched with this material. (There are no neon colors in my stash.) I also asked him to pick a pattern. He choose one that looks like waves which will work well with all the different colors.

I think I am going to switch to the lovely soft wave that so many in the blog have crocheted. Hopefully I can get the rhythm down quickly.

Intro and pics

Hi! I'm RC (Colleen) and I'm a rippler..... in fact I've started 2 ripple blankets! I'm using the "Smartie" pattern from 200 Ripples for both. The first is Caron Simply Soft, Brites! 7 colors all together. (only 4 done up so far). The Brites are really brite and happy. It makes me smile each time I take them out. This is marked for my AI duPont children's hospital project. I'm hoping it will make some kid smile!
The next is a smaller ripple done in Cascade Cherub Collection Aran. Only 4 colors for this one, blue, green, yellow and red. Great primary colors that will go with anything. This is actually marked to be the display model for the shop where I "work". I'm hoping to have enough left over to do a knit ripple too. I'm just not sure if I will enjoy the knit ripple as much as the crochet.

Everyone has such great ripples going on! I have really enjoyed looking at all the pictures. Thanks so much for letting me join.

SIGH!

What can I tell you my ripplers, no excuses, sometimes life just gets in the way. This past week a 6th birthday weekend complete with middle child meltdown and school-choice snaffu plopped a blogblock the size of Mt Kilimanjaro in my way. At this point, I believe we've completed our ascent and are well on our way careening down hill. The plains are hopefully on the horizon and I'll have more time to spend bopping around here and your sites.

I have, however, had me some un-rippling time:

Yep, those 20 annoying one stitch off on the last repeat so one edge was listing rows are no longer. So, I only have about a foot of ripple once again, but I've done the second foot twice now. Bummer. I'm ready to move forward again, but honestly, I really, really like this repeat and am thinking of making a yarn purchase to move on randomly with just these colors...or not. Am just not sure. So I guess I'll just mull, mull, mull some more.

That doesn't mean I haven't been rippling though:

I spent a good deal of my spare seconds this weekend releasing my stress by trying to figure out how to transform the soft wave into a round pattern. See those sheets of paper? There are similar ones all over my house. And yes, I do in fact mean ALL OVER. After trying and frogging, trying and frogging I took pity on my yarn (not in the picture, it's some gorgeous, shimmery Plymouth Fantasy Naturale in two shades of subtly variegated blues that I imagine turning into a blanket of a puddle-ish sort) and set about to chart it out before trying again. OUCH. It was like one huge undoable calculus problem. Even my hubby culdn't figure out the math for the increases. If I thought my head was going to explode with tension before, it really was now. SO, I took a deep breath and gave up and googled the heck out of every way I could think of to find a soft wave round crochet pattern or stitch. No go. But I did find Beth's great star pattern that I think just may hold the key to setting up the early rows...now that I've tried it out I think it just may work...and the baby gets a new lovey out of some of my scraps as a bonus. (and OK, thanks to Kim-the-enabler, there are now some granny squares too, but more about that elsewhere...)

Stay tuned, more rippling fun to come! Way to go y'all, your stuff looks great. I now want to buy enormous quantities of yarn and make WAY too many blankets. This could keep me going for a very, very long time...

Hello - Intro and Yarn!

Hi Everyone - I've really enjoyed seeing your ripple blankets so far, all of them are gorgeous!

I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself, my name is Keri and I blog over here. My yarn is rowan pure wool dk from here.

I ordered 14 balls to start, and I used the duvet cover below as my color inspiration for the blanket. The yarn layout is also inspired by Jane's pretty posings. I did pretty good on the colors, ordering them sight unseen- except for the two random balls at the top. Can you see the bright green and burgundy? What was I thinking!?!?! I think they'll be able to work themselves in somewhere, we'll see how it goes.

I've started rippling already, ~220 stitches with a 4mm hook is giving me a blanket that almost covers the top of my queen bed. Starting it was the biggest pain, I almost gave up crocheting into the base chain, however after that it's been smooth sailing -er- rippling. Very easy pattern and easy to memorize as well.

Did I mention I'm a total beginner at this crochet thing? I'm having a lot of fun learning and getting comfortable with it! =)

My ripples are growing, especially after a few days home with my sore little lad. I am concerned that I have used up certain wools and don't have others to introduce. This may mean that it will not be as long as I'd hoped, although at the moment, width wise with the ripples going vertical, it's about as big as a single/twin blanket.

Baby Ripple Progress

So this is day 2 of the baby ripple. I didn't work too hard on it yesturday as a few other WIP had stolen my attention. I also noticed how many PIGS I have ... scary thought! I have a horrible problem starting projects... then getting bored or lose my attention to another project.

I'm really starting to like these colors stacked up next to eachother. It's so different seeing them like this, compared to all for being used at once. Such as in this blanket that I made a few weeks ago. I used the exact same
yarns, and yet for some reason.. the colors look different.

I started thinking today about doing a baby hat to go along with this blanket. I'm thinking of trying to do it in a ripple *of course* similar to the round ripple blankets I've seen a few of you do. I'm thinking I would just stop doing the increases and that should turn it into hat form. Any help with this would be great. Since I'm still a newbie at the ripples, the round pattern may be a bit tricky at first.

A quick question for you all: How many WIP do you have going at once, besides your ripple?

Progress

I've made some progress on my ripple afghan. I have used each color once, and now I intend to repeat the stripe pattern as established 2 or 3 times more. I think if I continue to add colors randomly, the afghan will just look too busy. Besides that, I am really pleased with the stripe pattern I already have.

I did start the next color change, using the rose color again, Monday night. I got to almost the end of the second row, only to discover that I had made a mistake in the row below. So I need to frog almost 2 entire rows! I haven't had the heart to do it yet, but I will try to do it tonight. As we used to say in graduate school, "Nothing to it but to do it"!

Another new Ripple in the pond

Hi, I'm Agate. I've been following the ripple along since it was announced on the CrochetMe blog. I even started my own and I am really liking it, so I decided I'd go ahead and join.

I don't know why, but my pictures won't download. I haven't had a problem on my own blog, so if you wanna see a picture of my ripple right now it is here. I'll try to get it onto here another time. I've already tried twice today.

Most of my yarn is Red Heart acrylic, a couple skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease, and yarn from a purchased sweater I ripped apart. It is a mix of reds, browns, burgandys and a couple vareigated yarns. I think the colors are really nice together and a sunny yellow keeps it from being to dark. I didn't buy any new yarn for it, this is entirely from my stash. I am using a K hook.

I am using the lacy chevron pattern from Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet. I had to make one change to it though. The book says to make a 3 stitch turning chain and my sides were becoming warped and tight. I crochet very tight already, so I added a ch to the turning chain and it seems to be working better. It's not a wide blanket and I will probably have to add a border in order to make it a little wider, but that's okay, I tend to lose interest in blankets when I make them, shorter rows might stave that off for awhile.

I do want to finish this one though, I think it will look great on my bed.

since i've vowed to only use yarn that i already had, i'm going through some ugly spots, but i'm not frogging. i'm also afraid that i may run out of yarn. i'll worry about that when i get there.

Still Rippling

Here's my progress on the ripple blanket I am crocheting for my niece. I'm about to start another block of turquoise and I can't decide if I should do it the same as before or change it.

Someone asked in a previous post if anyone was using a special crochet hook. I'm not using one (I actually lost my Clover Soft Touch! *sob* I loved that hook so much I had to order another one) but I went through a stash of needles I recently inherited from my Great Aunt and Grandmother who were both needleworkers (a knitter and a crocheter, Grammie taught me to crochet when I was a teenager) and found amongst the plastic and aluminum hooks a tiny bone crochet hook and a hand made wooden crochet hook that I think belonged to my Great Grandmother on that side of the family. I want to use one of those hooks to make something after I'm done with this afghan.

P.S. Do knit ripples count too? If so, I am making some rippled squares for one of these in between my crochet ripples!
