2 weekends of watching Lost episodes will get you this far...

I've been happily rippling along on my ripple blanket, quietly adding blues, blue grays, teals and whatever else I find laying around.

I was quite excited to find the Ripple-along and joined right up.
I'm finding endless enjoyment in seeing how the ripple stitch changes the interplay of colors, in my own blanket and in others'.

Looking at other ripple blankets, however, I realize I'm not decreasing in the same way everyone else seems to be. I'm just skipping 2 stitches in the "valley" of the ripple, as opposed to actually decreasing them. I actually like it, though, the lacey holes it forms!

The blanket is getting to be warm in my lap, so I hope to have it finished before the weather gets too warm. I started it for Project Spectrum, so I would really like to have it done by the end of the month!

all about my sad ripple ripping...

OK, despite mounds of fabulous snow, I did find some time to ripple over the weekend. After starting with my to-die-for Pehuen cotton, I was pulling yarn randomly out of the pile of roughly coordinated blues and tans and browns I salvaged from my stash. And I just really wasn't liking it. Actually I was hating how it clashed with the Pehuen. And worst yet, I was hating it more with each color added. And I REALLY want to l.o.v.e. what I make out of that yarn. It deserves it and so do I.

So, I frogged back almost 20 rows (and yes, at 300 stitches it was PAINFUL). And now I'm here:

...and truly in love with it in a weird 70s retro type way. It reminds me of the Caribbean in an way too. Of course we did just have 24 inches of snow dumped on our heads, so that may be a tad bit of wishful thinking. I can even handle the spikiness. Who knew?

WOW, what a week!

Seriously, a little over a week ago, Kim and I kicked a few emails back and forth and as a result I claimed this space in the name of happy ripplers everywhere....and now we have OVER 40 crafters rippling along! I've had emails from the Netherlands, Australia, France, and I think Japan. People that have never crocheted are picking up hooks, and best yet, so are some people that haven't hooked in years. How cool is that?!?!?!

My husband is a bit perplexed, but hey, it's all good, and it's not often that something I do makes him giggle so much. He's taken to checking my email for newbies almost as often as I have.

So, with all this rippling and posting, I have made one tiny organizational change. If you scroll down, you'll notice the "labels" heading in the sidebar. When you write a post, at the box you're writing in there is a little space for you to enter a label for it. Humor me and put your name or "tag" there. That way the posts can be sorted according to author. So, if you want to check up on how Kim's ripple has progressed from the start, you can just click her label link and see all of her posts without browsing back through all of them....and we're now officially over 50 posts! YIPPEE!

You can also go back and enter labels for your old posts from the "posting" tab. click the box next to your posts, then at the top of that box, under "label actions" you can choose "new label" and make one for yourself and all of your old posts will be labeled in that one fell swoop.

Is that all confusing? Jot me a note and I'll clarify if I can...blogger tutorial most definitely needed at times.

Ripple, ripple, ripple, ripple, ripple, ripple, ripple...

I started my ripple blanket yesterday! I'm using my many random skeins of caron simply soft. The colors are a little odd but I want it to be a very eye-catching blanket. It's a little over 5 feet wide and is currently 7 rows long. Ripple is a lot more addictive than I thought it would be (I was afraid it would just be mind-numbing crochet).

This is for our granddaughter, Kati. Her birthday is this summer and I'm hoping to have it finished well before then. She is one of those unusual souls who has no favorite color, but her bedroom is lavender. Her mother did ask her the other day to choose another color for the eventual painting of her room After much deliberation, she chose green. Green — for a 5 year old little girl! I thought the 5 year old standard bearer colors for females were pink and purple! Her blanket will be like an Easter basket — bright eggy colors!

Can someone help me with a finishing question?

I have started another blanket that I hope to auction off to raise money for my hometown that was devestated by the tornado last week. The blanket has thick ripples of the two school colors, dark blue and white. I am considering finishing the blanket so the ripple "edge" on two sides will be straight across. I am still fairly new to crocheting and am not sure how to do this. Does anyone have any ideas? I am unsure of how this will work, especially on the starting side. I hope I was clear in my description. Thanks in advance for any help.

Progress Report

Today is Day 12 of working on the Ripple Blanket. I am close to being done soon. I think that I have 90% of the blanket done. I love crocheting in front of the tv because it covers my lap and legs and keeps me warm.

I have started my ripple afghan this weekend and I'm using yarn that was in my stash for years and years........I don't want to buy new yarn, just use what I allready had. At this moment I don't know yet if I like those colours together..........but I will just go on and perhaps i will begin to like it along the way Ü.

Getting started

After having a rummage through my yarn stash I finally settled on quite a dark and rich theme, with cream and lemon added in to lighten it up. I've taken a picture of most of the yarn I'll use but I can't work out where on earth the lemon yarn is (I know I have a bag containing 10 skeins somewhere!) and I've also made up a stripe pattern I like (from the the random stripe generator.)

I've opted to just make a cot sized blanket to start with. I am notorious for starting with great enthusiasm, only to get distracted and disinterested within a short period of time. Hopefully I can get to the end of this project with the extra incentive of posting on this blog.

Decision made...

I've decided to complete the blanket as is. I figured that I will need to add about 42 rows more in order for it to be a good size ~ it currently measures 291/2 x 15. I am considering two different options to add color. 1. border the blanket or 2. add ribbon. Not sure yet but I have managed to work 5 more rows today while listening to an audio book. I'll add a new pic soon.

I've another one in planning stage. I am still working out the colors that I have to choose from but I did take a look at the ripple generator ~ thats a great tool ~ to help me and I'll update as soon as I've decided.

Hi friends! I finally got the picture thing to work. Enjoy pictures of my stuff! Here's my ripple so far... it's 27 ripples, and each one is 17 stitches. It's 235cm long!

And here is my wool... I've since added a new colour. Yaay! Hooray for 6 rows!

Ripple Progress

after a few false starts, i've made some progress. i have one skein of 30 different colors and my one rule is that i'm not allowed to buy any yarn to finish this thing. a few colors aren't my favorites and so for me one challenge has been to just work through combinations that haven't been exactly inspiring to me. i had originally thought about picking colors randomly but i kind of gave up on that when i picked out two particularly heinous colors one after another. heinous to me anyway. i am enjoying myself though.

"Gather ye Rosebuds"

OK, so admittedly this is not just stash!! This Ripple Blanket to be, is for my 10 year old, very discerning daughter, who was very particular about her colors. So we have bought some newer yarn to make the palette of her choice. This is the Knitpicks, DK merino, and it was very reasonable. This is also my first blog entry ever!! I cannot wait to begin the blanket. This blog has some incredible posts and has been very motivating.

I have been mostly a knitter for the last 5 years or so, but learned to crochet first as a child. So I have ordered my own copy of 200 Ripple Stitches and intend to use the "Soft Wave" pattern. I love the gentle meandering of the curves. So armed with an old metal hook, and our fun collection of yarn, I can't wait to begin. I will return when my blanket starts to assume some character. Please keep up all of the posts, you are all very inspiring!

Hoppin' on the Ripple Bandwagon

Hello all you ripplers! I am so excited to be joining this blog and starting a ripple blanket of my own. You all have inspired me and your blankets are beautiful!!

As a little background: I began crocheting three or four years ago (my Mom taught me one summer), and since then I've bought several books (The Happy Hooker anyone? Love that book!) and waaaay too much yarn. I've also began to knit as well.

Here's my stash that I'm starting my blanket with, though I will have to hit the yarn shops eventually I think.... }:-)

Its a lovely jumble of different yarns, some acrylic, some not (I hope I don't have to wash it!)









And... drumroll please.... here's the start of my blanket! I am using a basic ripple out of a crochet stitch book from the 70's - given to me by my mom (I'll share a pic of it in my next post).

Hello from Connecticut

I'm another newbie, just joined, and I just wanted to stop by and say hi and thanks for letting me join. I have been reading the blog since last week and I have been enjoying the pictures of everyone's afghans. They are all beautiful!

I have been working on my ripple for a few days now, and I am very happy with how it is coming out. I have gone on and on about this afghan for the past couple of days on my blog, so I will try to keep this short.

I am using 18 colors of Caron Simply Soft randomly, and the "soft waves" pattern from 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns. The afghan measures 42.5" across and I hope to make it 60" long. 18 is a lot of colors to use, but so far I think they are blending well.

I do have one question for everyone, though. Have you thought about an edging for your afghans? I am inclined not to edge a ripple, but my corners are curling already. Since I am using acrylic, blocking isn't an option. I would appreciate any suggestions for an edging.

Hi everyone! I too started my ripple blanket after seeing Jane's and Alicia's.
I'm using as much stash as possible, but most of my stash is textured or variegated and I wanted to have solid color stripes and let the pattern make the texture, so I had to get more yarn for this. I'm making this for my daughter(2 and a half) for the bed she doesn't have yet!
Here is what I started with:
I was so excited to get started that I couldn't wait to get the pattern from the book - and I don't follow instructions well - so I just kind of messed around with it and came up with what is probably something similar.
When I had a pattern that worked and my yarn I figured out approximately how many rows I could get from each color and cut a little piece representing each row. I have some 100% cotton, some cotton/acrylic blend, and some 100% cotton, so I had to be sure not to have too many rows of one kind next to each other. I just slapped the pieces of yarn down and sorted for yarn type and let the colors stay where they fell (mostly.)

I found this ripple-along through Craftzine about a week ago. I'd never done a ripple before, so I borrowed a book and found out how.

Best. Thing. Ever.

So now I'm making this HUGE ripple blanket. I'm not very fast at it (probably because it's so long), but you'll get pics soon enough. As soon as I can work out the piccy... thing.

I, too, used the random stripe generator. HOURS of fun, just with that tool.

This is gonna rule.

I'm back to loving the colours. Yup. Yesterday was a dud of a day at the end of a brutal week. Even though my love of the blanket never wavered, I'm definitely back to loving the colours after a wee break. I imagine I'll go back and forth lots of times as this project progresses, and that's one of the things I'm most looking forward to. Onward!

Rippling on the Knitting Cook

Hey all you ripple addicts, a quick note from the Ripple Mistress. I PROMISE to update my progess this weekend sometime, but honestly all this snow is just too much fun to miss and is taking up monster amounts of time. The few minutes I have I've spent sending out invites to wanna-joiners. (and if you're one of them, I apologize for not sending personalized notes, but we've got some major snow cave/tunnel construction going on and I'm a tad obsessive about it...will pop you a note later...I PROMISE!)

I did want to give you a heads up to take a listen to the episode of The Knitting Cook coming out this next week. Faith is going to give us a shout out!

...and I hear tell you can find us on Craftzine too, though I haven't had time to go over and poke about...how cool is that?!?!? The power of the ripple is spreading ever outward!

I've got my stash and I'm ready to start

Several months ago, I purchased the now infamous Ripple Stitch Patterns. I flipped through page after page trying to decide which pattern to make. They all looked so delicious that I could not decided. And then, the fiber spirits sent me to this Ripple-Along. Woweee! I have the yarn - all wool, a mixture of Patons, Cascades, recyled and redyed sweater (lower left), various smaller balls of handspun, handdyed. I have the pattern, soft waves. This pattern will be perfect for a baby blanket for afghans for Afghans. I can't wait to begin and to join everyone else on this journey.

I've enjoyed re-purposing the old diaper bag for this project--it's like a Mary Poppins meets Dr. Housecall bag. Not so sure how I feel about the blankie at the mo. The colors are fun, and I enjoy the mostly random pull-outta-the-baggie color choice fun. The single crochet however, feels a little tight. Perhaps half-doubles might have done better in this instance...and a bigger hook...sigh. I'm considering ripping and beginning anew. It is nice and meditative, the up and the down, and I especially like decreasing for some reason. Anyone else feel the same way?

Stripes Only A Creator Could Love

I can't say I'm loving the colours at this point. That said, I totally love the blanket. If it ends up a soft, cozy pile of fug, so be it. I scrounged around and added a few more colours to my bag-o-yarn; these will either increase the fug or make the fug go away. I can't tell, and frankly I don't have the energy to scrutinize. I'm just going with it. It's the going with it that makes me most happy. Also, I really dig crocheting along with all you ripplers. Such fun!

ripple hints

Ok, so I am finally on the right track with my ripple blanket. I had to start over twice due to problems at the edges of my blanket. I didn't end my rows at the correct place in the ripple so I was ending up with too many stitches on one side and not enough on the other side. In case anyone else is having the same problems starting out, I wanted to refer you to some great advice I got on the Livejournal CrochetCrochet community. The not-so-mathematical chain stitch start (chain more than you need and then just rip some of the chains out when you get to the point where you want to end your first row) worked so much better for me than trying to count out 200-something chain stitches. Maybe I'm just not good at counting, but I thought the advice might be helpful in case anyone else is experiencing the same thing. Also, drawing a diagram of the last ripple helped me see where I would increase and decrease to keep the number of stitches the same.

I'd show you a picture, but...

It seems that crocheting anything while in the midst of moving is a super silly idea. However, with four projects going, why not add one more with ripples? It's a strange world when you've crocheted for 64% of your life and have never tried ripples or chevrons. Perhaps it's worse that my grandmother never showed me how to do a granny square, and so I am granny-square-less.

Anyway, I blame the lack of pictures on the move, and the lack of more than one row on this earthquake. (Because let me tell you, there's nothing quite like an earthquake about two miles from your home to disrupt your ability to stay calm. You start wondering if it's big enough for you to run to a doorway. Then, you try to keep track of what is falling from the bookshelf and wonder when it will end, if you should try to pick things up, and if you should dare eat your dinner. And then, you freak out with the question of whether or not it is beneath you or across the bay. Once it stops, you get headaches from the aftershocks.) Although, when you are a geologist, you actually get excited and wish you were outside to feel the ground shake, because we lose all sense when something like that happens.

However, I can tell you that my super soft yarn in red, oranges, and yellow are going to make a super cool afghan, until my sister finds the yarn and packs it away. There are no random colors to choose from since the far-too-large stash now lives in the new home.

It all began with a swatch

here's my first little swatch.

you know, to help with the math and all. the pattern is soft waves from jan eaton's "200 ripple stitch patterns."

Okay, I'm on the band wagon now!

I just so happened upon this group of rippling crocheters and thought, "that's a good idea!"
I've only done one ripple afghan in all my crocheting years and it was a basic one. I think they all are, so I'll give myself a little more credit there ;-) It was my very first afghan, as a matter of fact, and it was from the good ole "I taught myself to crochet" book kit.
With news going around of another expecting cousin, i just have to get started on an afghan for this baby! It's going to be a boy, i hear so stash diving i went!
To my disappointment, i don't have very many boyish colors - i could use this as a reason to go to the LYS and go buck wild crazy, but i won't. I'll be happy with what i have this time and get a move on with this ripple!
I've chosen Bev's baby ripple afghan pattern. i found enough yarn to pull this one off.
And here are my colors...
They're all worsted weight but i think a few of them are red heart and (what's the one walmart used to carry?), a couple of them are caron. so, there's gray, yellow, green, sage, bone and, hunter. I'm not used to working with so much green, i'm excited to see how it'll turn out. with all of the support, encouragement, and eventual bragging rights, i'm sure to finish. Can't wait to say, "ah, it's just a little something i whipped up while participating in a ripple-along."

Day 3

I'm still a-baby-steppin'. The second green (a different yarn than the first; I think it's Filatura Di Crosa Zara) and the brown (leftover Cascade 220) really change the look of the whole piece. I'm not sure I love it at the moment, but I'm very confident the next few colours will change things up again. I can't wait!

Hello everyone,

My name is Dawn and I am new to the group. I joined for the love of crocheting and the opportunity to share that with others. I really like ripple patterns but haven't done very many. I've used a basic one in the past that I actually used more for scarves than making afghans. Now that I have joined, I went through my stash to see what was available to get started when I found this:

This is a baby blanket I started over 2yrs ago. Hmm, not really interesting and lacks color. :D I am hoping to get some advice from you ladies on how to get this going again. It currently has 30 completed rows but I got bored and never finished. I'd like to add more color but don't know where to begin. You see, I was originally planning to take it apart and use the yarn for something else but now I think I'd like to finish it but need some help. You can take a look at the stash pile I have put together for options but I need to know if I should continue where I am, adding in new color or should I remove some rows to add balance then the new color? Have been thinking about a Big Blanket Project for a while now on my blog. This is my first KAL and I'm chuffed to bits that I've found some ripple mates. All that remains is for me to learn how to crotchet! Will keep you all posted with my progress.

me, me, me! I want to join!

Since seeing all the pretty blankets out there, I decided to go for it and start one of my own. I've known how to crochet since I was about 8 or 9, but never made a blanket. This one will be for my 19-year-old daughter who is away at college. Her bedroom is done in bright, bright colors including the hot pink and bright orange used here. I am just using caron simply soft brites in watermelon and mango. This yarn is so soft and not too bad for acrylic. Plus, I'm not too sure a college student would take the best care of a wool blanket. I, too, used the random stripe generator for my stripe sequence. It's pretty cool! Looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with!

Slow & Steady

Here's my progress as of last night. I've since added the next colour (what is it? Stay tuned!). We're spending a few days with family due to some bizarrely timed medical emergencies (everyone's okay, thank goodness) - my bag of ripples was the first thing I grabbed in the middle of the night yesterday when it was time to leave the house. Man, am I happy I have it with me. More tomorrow!

Unconvinced About My Colors

Hello, All! Thanks, Dawn, for putting this together.

Like just about everyone else, I was inspired by Alicia's throw, based on Jane's. I'm glad to see others have been bitten by the bug as well. I hadn't crocheted in quite some time, but I'm loving the soothing rhythm of this work (especially since I'm using one of Bill's hooks.)

I expect that I'll end up mumbling double-crochet nonsense by the time I finish this, as Alicia described here... but for now, it's wonderful.

I'd read - I think it was in the Mason-Dixon Knitting book - that one could combine any warm and cool colors as long as they weren't black, white, primary, or pastel, so I attempted to do a sort of "Mission Falls" palette using Blue Sky Alpacas cotton. It's lovely to work with, fantastically soft... but I'm not so sure of my color combo. I'll keep plugging along and see how it goes. I do have some Mission Falls cottons in the stash so perhaps they'll be my next effort - I'm thinking these things are addictive.

Long live the ripple blanket!!

I found Alicia's blog following a search for a ripple crochet pattern. I have since visited every day to check the progress of her beautiful blanket (as well as her life in general). Everything she touches is beautiful!! Her blanket inspired me to create one which will go to a co-workers daughters. I can't wait to see how they like it because I LOVE it. I ended up using a mix of leftover pastels from the slew of baby blankets I have been working on as of lately. :)

Thanks for the invite, y'all. I am stoked. I'm making a baby afghan for a friend, just a great excuse to do this. Here's the stash I'm using:Citrus, white, and grape for a little kick. I don't want it to get too light. The pattern I adapted from the crochet stitch bible, wavy ripples. They use DC, but I want thinner stripes so I am using SC's. Here's the wiggle worm beginning...I put all the colors in a baggie and I think I'll just draw them out randomly to choose what color goes next. We'll see! I'm headed to maine this sunday for a week of family time so hopefully I can keep up!

Attempt a Pic

Ah, ha! Sorry for the nearly double post, but I was determined to figure this picture thing out. Thankfully, I noticed the correct buttons. This is the ripple baby afghan I am nearly finished with. I would prefer a brighter colors, but these are available locally (a euphemism for Wal-Mart) in baby sport yarn. When I get yarn for my granddaughter's blanket, it will be worsted and hopefully, brighter pastels.

Well, I finally got in. Just a small snafu with setting up a Google account, but all is well now!

I'm excited to be here. I'll be purchasing yarn for a new ripple this weekend, probably. One of our little granddaughters will be 6 this summer and I'm thinking she would love a colorful "blanket" for her bed. Pastels, centering around lavender to match her bedroom, hmmmm? In the meantime, I'm nearly done with this ripple, a baby blanket for another grand, scheduled to arrive this summer.

I'm in trouble too

I've never actually done a ripple before now, so I had no idea just how damn addictive it can be. Last night the very first thing I did after I came home was paw through the stash. I think everyone else's colors are WAY better than mine -- see below for 21 flavors of fug. I'm hoping I can pull it off though. I do have a whole other stash that I will be looking at this weekend. I chained 303 and did three rows in three colors last night. And then I dreamed in ripples. This is bad.

i've admired both jane's and alicia's ripple blankets for quite some time and have been looking through my stash for the appropriate yarn. and i think i may have found it. that's a bag filled with knitpicks' merino style and andean treasure. i have to do a little math to figure out how big a blanket i can make, because i'm not buying more yarn. honest.

This. Is. Amazing.

I'm equally addicted, not only to the rippling (aaahhh...), but also to checking out everyone else's work! Ladies, those are some beautiful afghans.

I had thought about using the Random Stripe Generator, because it's soooo fun to play with, but, as I'm too lazy and cheap to buy more color ink for my printer, I decided on closing my eyes and grabbing a ball of yarn. I think I'll get the same effect. I was unhappy with it at first, but somehow that last stripe of green made it all better. I'm trying to keep a running list of what types of yarn I'm using, mostly so I can keep track of how much I'm using. Like I said, it's all acrylic or acrylic/ wool blend, which is just fine with me since I want to be able to throw it in the washer anyway. So now, a picture, and then off to try to write this Spanish paper. Why won't it write itself?!

I'm in Trouble

Last night I chained 219 for a blanket just over 60" wide. The grey I started out with will be the most-represented colour, since I have about four balls of it (more than any other). It's Polo Zitron cotton-microfibre. The pale purple that comes next is Rowan Cashsoft, and the red is an unknown deliciously soft 100% merino (I think). It was all I could do to put it all down to go to sleep. And now, in the middle of the afternoon, I'm dreaming ahead to getting into my pajamas for some more relaxing rippling. I'll shoot for better photos tomorrow.

I found this knitalong through Flickr. I have been coveting the blankets on the Vintage Stripe Blanket Flickr group, but was able to hold off from starting one for a while. I finally succumbed to it last week even though I have many projects on the needles. This blanket is so addictive.

I am using 8 colors randomly. The yarn (Caron Simply Soft) is from my stash. The stitch pattern is "Soft Wave" from 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns by Jan Eaton. 147 stitches

I actually found it kind of a cool way to do random without really having to "think," because unless you have your eyes closed when you're reaching for the next color, you are thinking. I personally didn't want to think about that at all, but that's just me. I don't like thinking if I don't have to.
