A wee ripple...

I have never really crocheted, but really want to learn and hence have started learning all the names of the stitches, to progress on to reading a pattern...

I have started small and hope to get a wee hand towel for my down stairs loo at the end of my efforts. I suppose I will be creating loads of little face cloths etc over the months until I get to grips with my new project.

Eventually I'll progress to a big woollen ripple... I have been admiring all the wonderful ripples on loads of different websites over the last 4-6 months and just couldn't resist trying to work out the pattern myself. It's rippling all right, but the edges more so than I was hoping!
Oh well, there's one way to learn, and that's practice, practice, practice!

In the meantime I'll watch all your wonderful blankets grow into huge beautiful works of art!

Well, I finally got a chance to pick up my ripple afghan this week. It is now 30 and 1/2 inches long. I'm still a little indecisive about how big I want to make it. I originally wanted to make into a bedspread, but I didn't take into consideration how much it would shrink when I started the ripples so it shrunk ALOT.

Finished another ripple

I finished another ripple. My first one was in fingering weight yarn and huge, this one was worsted weight (Red Heart) and more lap sized. Here it is:



I think it turned out nice, and is now my cat Guinevere's favorite nap spots. Because of that napping, I have decided not to wash it (soften it up) until just before the gifting.

I am onto another crocheted afghan anon ripple type. If you want to see photos of that and some other projects just meet me over at my main blog.

rippling along...

Well I took a short ripple break this week, but I'm back at it now.
I was able to find some "Tangerine" in the Red Heart Soft. With the addition of that and some more white, I think the blanket is coming along nicely. Though, I am rather tempted to keep adding new colors from my stash, but I know it will look all wonky if I start adding now. Next time!

Finished Ripple!

I finished it! this is a ripple prayer shawl for a friend of mine spending some time in Germany just because she can! i think she is going to really like it. the specs:

Yarn:
-red - red heart soft, wine, about 4 balls
-blue - Bernat Satin, admiral, about 2 balls

i have to say that i am really glad that this one is done, but just like many others here i have plans for another one eventually. i have the yarn but want to do a few other projects first! i'll post pics when i get it started!

p.s. here is a small ripple prayer shalw perhaps for a baby. it started out as a baby blanket then i realized that i hated my color combination so instead of frogging it i put a border on it and called it a baby shawl! i think it works.

Ripple II : Son of Ripple

Did any of you guys go through a period of mourning when your ripple was finished? I couldn't stop thinking about rippling. I kept finding myself imagining crocheting the next row.Then I would remember that it was All Over and feel sad. I had serious Crochet Angst. So, meet S.O.P. - Son of Ripple...
After several weeks of grooving on hot pink and red together (a la the edging on my first ripple), I knew that was where this one had to go. Pink to red and then maybe (haven't decided yet) a row of chocolate brown or periwinkle blue. I plan to make little red pom poms to attach to the points of each edge. I love red pom poms nearly as much as red ric rac and red buttons!
I wonder how far I'll get through this one before I start dreaming of Ripple III : The Next Generation??

Ripples On The Brain

Since I haven't yet purchased yarn for my next afghan, I was playing around with what I have. I'd really like to use this yarn for my next afghan, but I don't have enough. It's a discontinued yarn, so I'll see if I can get some more, but in the meantime I started a Ripple Scarf. I may rip it out if I can get the enough of the same colors to make an afghan. I'm using pink, chocolate and vanilla. Reminds me of Neapolitan ice cream.

For those of you who want to ripple and an afghan seems daunting, or you just don't have enough yarn at the moment, why not try this scarf? I've modified the Easy Ripple Afghan pattern to accomodate scarf width. Please note, this is in no way a new pattern, nor am I taking credit for it. It is simply a modification of the Easy Ripple Afghan by Suan B sized down in width. I'm using Laines Du Nord Giunco and a G hook. The scarf is about 6 1/2 inches wide.

This one is made with single crochet (hence the slightly more steep ripples) in the back loops (for extra flewibility).

a ripple-y start

Yay! I started my first Ripple afghan. I've looked through all of your beautiful photos and I am very excited to start one of my own. I had a hard time choosing colors that my son would like but finally found some that he would be happy with.

I'm pleased with the progress and found the pattern easy to follow.

I will post pictures of my progress and will enjoy looking at all the other photos that are posted.

Happy Mothers' Day!

Blessings to all of you ripplers who also share the honorable title of Mother. :) What a tricky, difficult, wonderful job it can be! I have four children between the ages of five years, and nine months, of age. Two girls and two boys. They are awesome, and I am so overjoyed to be their mother!

Because my afghan looks different from every angle, I took another couple of shots to help round things out. I want you to have a somewhat accurate understanding of what it looks like, after all! ;)

Ripple Pillow

Look! It's a ripple pillow cover! So far this is turning out to be one of my favorite projects. I love the way it looks on my couch.



Every time I see it I smile.

So now I'm going to take a small break from the ripples to finish some other projects that I've been neglecting. (Not to mention housework or a social life.) But no worries. I will soon be back to show you the stash busting ripple that I'm planning.

Keep it up everyone. I'm still loving drooling over everyone's beautiful ripples.

Finally done. Unfortunately, I had to use the flash so the picture isn't that great. Maybe I'll get one in daylight before it gets wrapped up and given to my Mom on Sunday. I have to say, I'm glad to be done with it, because I already have more ideas in my head for prettier colored yarn. Anyways, goodnight!

Temporarily Done...

Well, thanks to the 80 degree heat these past few days, I've temporarily finished my ripple. It's probably a good 10 rows short, but it's a lighter weight than my comforter, and perfect for sleeping under right now. I'll be sure to post pictures some time soon...

It's funny... how typically ripples are stash busters... but mine was a stash creator. I now have a ton of half scains of yarn. Now, do I make a smaller ripple from them? Probably. :D

All Finished!!!!

I'm still amazed that I completed this blanket. I'm a great starter of projects, but finishing... well I often never get to that part. lol

The first picture is my update of what I had done since I last posted. The orange stitch holder marks where I was.

The next picture is of the completed blanket on my sons bed. He loves it! I'm taking a little break from ripples, but I do plan on making Caedmon some ripple pillow shams to match his new blanket. I'll post those on here when I get around to doing it.

For those of you doing soft waves...

I managed to get my hands on a copy of the 200 ripple stich book by Jan Eaton at our local library and copied down the soft waves pattern along with some others. I bought the yarn and got started a couple of nights ago and have been having trouble ever since...

I think I missed a line in the pattern for Row 1 at some point because things aren't lining up right when I get to row 2. AND... the book is now checked out to someone else. I'm hoping that one of you can help fill in what I missed. I'll try to write this in a way that isnt giving away any copyrighted information and hopefully it will be enough to answer my question...

As I have it, in Row 1 you work the dcs, then work the top of the ripple, then the dcs again, then repeat. It doesn't share any information about the [dc tog] for the trough. My thinking is that I left out the part that says to work the trough first. My pattern for Row 2 seems to be correct... starts with the dc, then says to work the trough, dc, then work the top of the wave, and repeat. If I just follow the pattern for Row 2 as if it were Row 1 (and keep repeating the same pattern) will it work?

Starting the "pretty" ripple

After completing the ugly ripple, it took me a while to find inspiration for a pretty ripple.

I finally found one in this little book I discovered at Half Price Books.

This is where it gets complicated as well as a lesson well learned.

The yarn called for in the pattern is $6 a skein, which, I know, is not a whole lot in the crochet world, but is a little steep considering that I've already spent my "allowance" for May and it's, what, the 10th???? On top of that, the white has apparently been discontinued and I need 3 balls of the stuff. So......I compromised and bought different yarn in different colors...

...and started my new ripple last night. And absolutely hated it because I fell in love with something else to start with and this was not it! So...

...I frogged (I LOVE that word!) what I had done, went online and searched for the "real" yarn. Then I went to Michael's and bought 2 balls of the stuff just to get started, since I had a bee in my bonnet about this ripple, came home and ordered the rest online (I even found 3 stray balls of white!).

An hour later...

...I only have two rows left to go and then I'll be stuck waiting for the ordered yarn.
(and, yes, that is a size N hook!)

Lesson: Do NOT compromise, it just wastes a load of time.

slowly rippling

Some of you guys are so fast!! This is taking me forever. Well I did have to restart three times.

Anyway here is my ripple after about a week. I'm not a crocheter I'm a knitter, but I really like the look of the crochet ripple. Today I got to wondering how much faster would it be to knit a ripple. So I picked the Frangipani pattern from the 2oo ripple book andgrabbed some Noro and cast on. This is only two rows so far. I really need a longer needle. The stitches are really squished on here. Hopefully tommorow I can run out and get one. I think it will be fun to have both going at once. Of course it will take even longer to finish the first one now that I cast on a 2nd. This rippling is very addictive.

Well, I have succumbed to the temptation to ripple. My knitting has been thrust aside, because my yarn arrived yesterday! It is the Swish Superwash from Knitpicks. I ordered one of every color. As you can see, my knitting buddy is very excited.

Rippling the Day Away!

I've been infected with the ripple afghan addiction......don't send help! Yes, I've got it bad.....very bad. So much so that I'm contemplating beginning a third ripple and this is before I've even begun to complete the two I've got going at present. You all know it's your fault because before I joined your forum I was knitting (bad word, here) and crocheting things in a normal (is there such a thing for us crafters) fashion and now, I'm all into rippling way too much.

Above is a pic of the wave ripple I'm doing for my kitties....yes, even they will get a ripple to snuggle up on. I'm using Red Heart super saver because even though it feels a bit scratchy at first, I understand it softens up with each successive washing and they'll love that. I was having a bit of trouble getting the wave's first row correct but you helped me sort out my problems, so thanks to those who responded.

This ripple is for a baby boy and I'm using Bernat's Baby Softee using 2 strands at once in a solid blue and a marled blue and white and Susan's easy ripple pattern. I think using 2 strands gives this yarn so much more body for the ripple and I really like how it's working up.

Yes, I'm on a roll, but having great pleasure in the whole process and that's what counts, right?

Ripple Progress

I haven't posted in a long time, and for good reason. I have been making very slow progress. Here it is, in all it's 22 inch glory. I started with a 243 chain which ended up being 64 inches. Standard twin size (completely on accident). So because of this happy accident, I decided that the length should be 87 inches. I'm only 25% done! However, thanks to everyone here and their newly completed ripples, I now have a second wind. My goal is 50% done by the end of May! I won't bore you with any more details, but if interested, here is my post on my blog.
