Ripple 1 ,2, and 3 ?

And Ripple #3 Maybe...See I was teaching someone how to amke a ripple and it seemed like it would be easiest to just start one from the beggining, so here it is #3 it would have to be made using a variety of yarns because this yarn is hard to find and cost too much for a whole blanket.

I haven't seen many ripples that use a variety of yarns. I would need to vary my yarn gauges slightly because this is an odd yarn. It's slightly thicker then a worsted .

Call Me Crazy.

Call me crazy. Call me obsessed. Both are accurate at this point. I started another ripple. The first is almost 50% complete. My son suggested that I make his girlfriend a ripple as her graduation present from us. Sounded like a good idea at the time. Yarn was purchased (Simple Soft in a mixture of Brites and regulars). Rippling commenced. Soft Waves pattern, in case you were wondering.You can read a few more details on my blog.

Wow, Ive finally finished up on my Granny Square Along afghan so now Im starting my Round Ripple Soft Waves afghan. Im making it for a friend of mines friend. huh? I cant write poetry!

I got the pattern from Mik Knits & Crochets, Too!. Its a great pattern very easy and simple to read. I love the colors. Its going to a baby boy that is due in September. Its my first ripple attempt. If I like it Im thinking of making a big one for my king bed.

Say ooooh! Say aaaah!

I just had to show off again. The little-boy-big-bed-blanket arrived at its intended destination. This picture made it worth the pricey shipping it cost me to get it there. My daughter says he loves it and I can't believe it was the perfect size because it was my practice peice and I was just using up odd skeins of yarn plus a few I had to buy to make it big enough. I was guessing at the size. I think I guessed pretty good.

Addendum to the finished ripple

I just wanted to share this: I just washed my purple ripple in cold water with Ivory Snow, on the delicate cycle, and fabric softener in the rinse. Then dried it on delicate low heat setting. OMG it is so soft and cuddly I just wanted to wrap up in it and nap! It turned out beautiful!

My first ripple-DONE!

I finished it today......Caron Simply Soft in every shade of purple available. I am pretty happy with it. This one will go to my daughter. Now I'm going to start a Halloween granny square afghan I found on line....it is AWESOME. But I have been toying with the idea of making an orange and black Halloween ripple too. Then some Christmas throws...maybe a granny and ripple. I will be crocheting nonstop to the end of the year..........then start all over!

What kind of yarn is everyone using?

Just wondering what kind of yarn everyone is using, and what they think of it. I'm sure there's posts on this, but not in all one spot. For my first ripple I used wool-ease thick and quick, and I love the softness, how fast it works up and it drapes really well. Discuss!!

Another granny chevron

Because the last blanket got such good reviews, and I liked doing it so much, I'm starting another granny chevron. This one will be in Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in Patio Pinks.

I have about 8 full skeins of the stuff and no clue what I bought it for... hehe so a blanket it shall now be. We'll see how far they get me... each ball is only 1 1/2 oz. so I may not get very far...But I can always add a bunch of rows in a similar pink to the ends, or the middle somewhere.. who knows. We'll see how far I get with 4 skeins then think about adding a middle section.

I'm using an "H" hook and going for an adult cover up blanket. Pictures to come later, once I get past the first few painful rows.

One for me, one for you

Here's the first blanket I started - big long rows of double crochet. Now I think I'm going to go in the opposite direction and do some thicker vertical stripes, assuming I can figure out how to do that. It's Rowan soft wool, and I don't really like working with it.

And here, also being modelled by my sofa, is the Ripple, made using Debbie Bliss Cotton Angora, so much nicer on the hands. It's an overdue wedding gift. If I can bear to give it away...

Rippling Soft Wave Baby Blanket

I started my first great grandson's baby blanket. He's due in July. I'm doing the soft wave ripple, using Lion Brand Yarn-Baby Soft sportweight and G hook. At first I was doing a lot of frogging because I was not paying attention. When I first wanted to do this project I couldn't decide whether or not to knit it or crochet it. Now that I'm doing it, because I frog so much, I'm really glad that I chose to crochet and not knit. I love the soft feel of the yarn. It should come out to about 45" square. Right now I think I'm going to use white to scallop edge it. I'll see how that looks when I'm finished.

Questions... answered

I'm glad so many of you enjoyed my granny ripple. A few people had questions and just incase your like me and forget to check comments... I'll do them here.

Freda: I bought one skein of each color I used. I used 8 different colors, so 8 skeins. But I doubt I even used half of 7 of them. I used more of the teal since that was my border color. For an adult blanket, I'd suggest at least 3 of each color you are wanting to do. Just to be on the safe side!

Laura: Oh I love using the Simply soft. I'm actually in the process of doing wholesale yarns and carrying the simply soft. About the color changes, I just left a tail about 3 inches long after each color change and then did my border over them, covering them up as I went.

It's been a while since I was here the last time - but I have been working hard :-) With my ripple...And now it's almost 'closing-time'. 15% left to go....and I can hardly wait. The blanket is now 140 cm long - it will end up being about 170 cm. So I'm more than satisfied....and I now have most of the yarn for ripple nr. 2 :-).
Last night I did some pattern-work. Sitting there with Jan Eatons book I took the ones I liked the most - and tried and tried. To see how they worked with the new yarn etc. I think I will try the 'soft waves' - but must face that the needle will have to be 2 numbers smaler than now. Rather thin acording to my taste. But: the yarn rules, so this is it. I will put some photos in here when I have all the yarn...

Granny Chevron FINISHED

I have had this finished for several days now, but just haven't gotten around to taking and posting pictures. I've been busy trying to get things done for the shop, buying new yarns *yea!* and working up some quick things to sell. So back to the granny chevron.... the pattern is from the 200 ripple book #190. It is 5 repeats done in Caron Simply soft. Some are brights and some are just the normal. The first set of colors are random, picked by my hubby. The 2nd and 3rd are more planned. A color could only touch another once. Which made each color look different in each section.
I made sure to end it with the teal color, as that was the one I started with, and would also be the border color. I think it helps bring it all together nicely.

Specs at a glance:

Ripple Love

This is my first post to the collective blog and I already have one finished afghan under my belt. I named it the Blue Sand Ripple. It's a mish mash of yarns from my stash. There's some Patons Canadians, Red Heart, and some Mainstay. I used SusanB's Easy Ripple Afghan pattern and I just loved it. I loved it so much I decided to use it for another afghan.



For the next blanket I'm using Caron Simply Soft. The colours I'm using are Dark Country Blue, Country Blue, Dark Sage, Sage, and Off-White. I was a little disappointed with the colour Sage as I wanted something more muted, but I think I can live with the end result.

I'm so in love with ripples right now I have more yarn coming for a third blanket. This time I'll be using some Red Heart with Patons Canadiana. And after much lusting after, I finally ordered the book 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns. I really don't foresee the ripple love ending anytime soon. :-)

Who was it a week or so ago, that made a great looking ripple in white, lime green, and a darker green? I would really like the specifics (or close to) so that I can make a similar colored afghan. It was so nice looking!

Wedding Ripple

Hi Everyone,
I am brand new to the Ripple along. I am really enjoying seeing all the great ripple blankets that are in process. I heard about the Ripple along from a student in my beginning crochet class at my shop in East Lansing. At the time I was also wondering what to do for a wedding gift for the daughter of friends who had been so very generous with my daughter and son in law when they got married last September. I don't know the bride and groom well, but the parents have been good friends of my husband since highschool. All I know is it has to be special. So! The idea dawned during crochet class. A classic ripple blanket in organic cotton (Inca from Henry's Attic). I had never done a ripple blanket before, but I have crocheted most of my life. I am very pleased with how it is turning out - it is very soft! I also am impressed with how quickly it is going. I made the foundation chain last Thursday, worked all the way to Chicago and back, and have a goal of of full stripe (all three colors) every day. The wedding is June 23. I hope I make it!


Here is a close up detail. The colors are richer than my monitor shows - but all natural - the cotton grows that way!

Round ripple done!

This isn't the one I started the ripple along with, however, it was the one that kept my interest longer. It is actually the one I designed, the Gentle Waves Round Ripple Afghan. I don't know how big it is, but here it is on top of my king sized bed, so that is a size comparison at least. I had absolutely no problem with it lying flat in the center. I will definitely make another one like this again. In fact, I have another one just like it, but limited to four colors, in progress. The one I started the RAL with is also almost done and I'll get to that next. Thanks everyone for a great experience! I have so enjoyed seeing everyone's ripples and have been truly inspired by you all.

Covers the basics and some more advanced techniques as well. Very clear pictures that walk you through step by step. No help specific to ripple patterning, but they cover decreases well, and hey, ya gotta start somewhere, right?

New Rippler (With Questions)

Hi everybody! I'm the new rippler in town. I've got one skein in every color of Knitpicks Shine Sport and a size G hook just waiting for some free time. I'm so excited!

In the mean time, I've been swatching, and I think something is wrong. I did the whole borrow-the-book-from-the-library-and-copy-down-the-pattern thing, and I think I made a mistake in the set-up rows. The pattern is (you guessed it) Soft Waves. In the version I scribbled all three rows are identical (except row 1 starts with the 4th chain instead of the 1st stitch), and I feel like that just can't be right (otherwise why would the pattern be three rows and not one or two?). Also my swatches have strangely sloping edges.

If anyone can shed some light on this by emailing me with the set-up rows (1&2), that would be fantastic! The book is already checked out elsewhere, and I don't know how else I'll get a look at the pattern. You can't expect me to wait a month to start rippling, can you?

Getting there...

I am finally making a little more progress on my ripple. Working lots of hours, sore hands and busy kids do put a damper on the rippling. But....

I have managed to get this far, and I really love it. My blog is here if you want to read more.

It is so fun looking at all the great pictures and color choices. Do the rest of you plot new ripples in your sleep? Or is it just me? Hehe.

Yes, I think this one will weigh at least 10 pounds when it's done. It'll probably squish whoever tries to snuggle under it. But I still like it...

A big thank you to everyone that helped me figure out what I was doing wrong on the Soft Waves Pattern. I finally got off to a great start and now I can't put it down!!! I worked about 8 rows in one colorway and it wasn't quite working, so I frogged it all, went to the store and bought all new yarn. Now I'm loving it!

Hello Again!!

First, I just want to say all your ripples look BEAUTIFUL! :) Wonderful jobs and keep up the good work!! :)

As for mine, I had to frog it once and then start over!! ICK!! I am now half way done it, yet again, and going strong. I think I may need to go to the craft store and get more yarn for it. Oh darn. lol I also want to do a tank top for my daughter in a ripple pattern as I just bought the 200 ripple pattern book. :) I think she would look sooo cute! Well I hope everybody has a wonderful ripple day!

The Prerogative of All Ripplers

After agonizing over whether to use blue...

...or chocolate brown as the oddball stripe in my new ripple,
I finally chose green.
This green doesn't photograph well. It's actually quite a bit yellower than it appears here - more of a slime green, in fact. I am constantly amazed at how much yarn these afghans take. As a previously-non-crocheter, am I just unaware how little you get from one ball of yarn? Or do they really gobble yarn??
And I think I am finally running out of rippling steam. It's been an obsession for two months but my stamina is failing me :(

Done the 2nd blanket

Do you remember that I'm working on three blankets - a granny square ghan, a scrap ripple ghan, and another ripple that will be a bridal shower gift? Well, I finished the gift - and in time too! It's not as wide as I was going to do it, because I switched it to be vertical instead of horizontal. It's blocking right now, trying to even out the end... heh. It's totally different colours than she requested, one by fault of mine, one due to the fault of Walmart's selection. But anyway, here's a photo from May 11th.

And since that shot, I've added two more rows - white and dark green. And now it's complete. Tada!!

Okay.. so before i posted pictures of a ripple in purple.. but instead im doing this one for my brother who will be going away to college in august tpo suny it if i ever get it done... the school colors are blue and white so i was instructed not to sneak in any other colors

A bit of Learn to Crochet FUN!

As I am a horrible enabler and I want everyone to crochet all the time, I'm throwing this under your noses. Ripple-me Senseless!

The weather here in SoCal has temporarily cooled off a bit so I managed to get in a few more rows on my Ripple Afghan.

This is the newest obsession project that I am working on from the Feb/March issue of Crochet Today. It is still small enough to fit in a plastic zipper bag and stuff into my purse. The single crochet ribbing at the bottom was pretty boring but after that, the crochet is a lot more fun! I changed the colors to ones I liked better, Tan, Natural and Spa Blue.

My yarn-snobbery has taken a beating what with the Caron Simply Brites afghan and now this vest out of Lustersheen. I'll take my Humble Pie a la mode, thank you.

Opinions on colour please

Hey there. I realise that as I am only about a quarter of my way into my first ripple I should probably not be dreaming of my second (in much the same way that it isn't really the done thing to imagine your second husband when married to your first, but who doesn't?). With that said though, I want to make a baby blanket for an infant of undetermined sex and would love some colour advice. If I make it in cream I think I will be bored out of my mind before I get more than 5 inches in. Also, any advice on size would be appreciated. Don't want to spend until the baby is seven crocheting the damn thing!

Preemie Ripple

I haven't posted for a long time because I keep getting distracted from my ripple afghan by various charity projects. However, I have been trying to work ripples into those projects as well. So far, I have made this colorful preemie ripple:

I worked out the striping scheme myself before I started, so it isn't random. All the yarn used is Caron Simply Soft. I used an H hook and the "soft waves" ripple pattern. However, it took an hour to weave in all the ends, so future preemie ripples will probably be boring monotones that I can make a little more efficiently!

Ripplin' Along

Today I finished the first third of the ripple blanket for Math Guy~~that's 17 stripes (3 rows each stripe). It is approximately 55 inches wide and 25 inches long. I should wind up with a blanket about 75 inches in length. I've enjoyed working on it so far and will likely remain fairly monogamous until it is finished. What a fun project! I couldn't wait to get to the end of the first 17 rows so I could start the colors over again to see how they worked up this time. My son seems to like it~~he even suggested I make his girlfriend one for her graduation, so she could take it to school with her. Hmmm.....let's see how this one goes first. If I do make one for her, it won't be out of wool, but I could handle some Simply Soft or Red Heart Soft (but I don't think any of our local stores carry it.) Something to keep in mind, though.

ETA: I'm using Cascade 220 Superwash for this 'ghan. If you hurry, WEBS still has it on sale until the 25th of May.

Frogged, it's all frogged

Well, this is what it used to look like:
But now it's all gone. All gone.

I found that the queen size width was too much for my large loose stitch compounded by the "textured" effect caused by picking up only the back half of the stitch on every second row. Love the look, but the structure was too weak and stretchy.

So tonight I spent HOURS (I could not believe how long it took!) pulling it all apart. I'll try a smaller ghan with a smaller hook and a tighter stitch. I'm gonna forget the textured stripe too.

Hopefully it'll work out this time.

An Update

I've been knitting and crocheting, working on both a wedding present (the knitting) and baby present (le' ripple). Here's the ripply progress as of last week.

Hunt down the bacon and eggs scarf. Yep, I kid you not. So fabulous. The most innovative use of ripples I have seen to date.

I once again have been a lax Ripple Mistress, but there's been chaos on the home front lately that I won't pain you with, you can hunt through my blog if you really want to know why I now jump at slight noises and can't seem to sleep.

Am still working on the site improvements. They should roll in gradually, so keep those peepers peeped!

Ripple Foursome

I'm making steady progress on my ripple blanket and really enjoying the work as well. I've been into making these picture groupings lately, so you'll have to forgive the use of a cheesy technique. I took these picture on my porch where I have this wonderfully weathered teak bench. I like the way the slats of the bench mirror the lines of the ripple.

Ripples in unexpected place

I thought I'd share the ripple love with the unsuspecting public, so I took a wee ripple down to the river and stitched it to a railing. Now I'm wondering what will happen to it... all alone out there in the world! :-)

Ok, definitely NOT my first choice for colors OR yarn, but....you work with what you've got right? ;) In the meantime, I'll just burn my retinas looking at it :)

This crazy blanket started off with the idea of making a scarf for my husband for Christmas. He's a hawkeye fan, thus the black/white/gold. Tried knitting about 4 different patterns, frogged 4 different scarves, hating them all. Then decided to make it into granny squares, and make a blanket....hated those too. Just didn't look right.

So...balled it all up and stuck it back in the closet until finally one day thought "hmm...might as well use it as a practice ripple" since I still can't make up my mind on what yarn I want to use for my "real" ripple. So I decided to make it into a blanket for my son - who is 2 1/2 and thinks the colors are just fantastic ;)

Its about half done, and when I took the pictures yesterday it was *about* 32" long and 45" wide. Guesstimate ;) I'll have to actually sit down and measure soon.

So that's where I'm at for now! I'll post when its finished.

So this is how far I got this time...

The three balls of white yarn from eBay arrived, but the rest hasn't yet, so now I'm stuck again and suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

Novice Questions

Hi there, I'm new to this blog and new to crochet. I tried to get started on my Soft Waves (from the 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns book) ripple blanket yesterday and I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. I have a couple of questions...

1. The pattern says that you should start with a foundation chain of 12 + 3 chains. I'm using 195, but I'm not sure if I should count the one on my hook. I don't think that I should, but I just thought I'd ask the experts for clarification.

2. The pattern also says that you should end row 1 with 2dc into the last ch. If my math is correct, you should only have enough chains for this to be the first of [2dc into the next ch] twice. Am I right about this?

I think I'm having trouble starting with the right number of chains. Who knew that it was so hard to count to 195.
