A question for my ripply friends...

Hi all,
I am just about to start a ripple lap quilt for my niece. She is 12 going on 20 (okay, they all are at that age!) and loves really trendy color combinations. Right now, she adores chocolate brown with a pale blue. She can't stand any traditional girly colors.

My question is this: I have a dark, espresso brown, a heathered chocolate brown and the blue she likes. Will this work up as something that she will like for years, or should I add some other sophisticated colors (no pink or lavender) so that she can enjoy it as she grows up, but also include her faves. I have enough partial balls around here to jazz it up with the primary colors being her faves.

What would you do?
Thanks in advance,
Jan

Personally, I would sprinkle it with some other colors as well. Our tastes change as we get older and not only that it will make it more special that you added a little of your own tastes to it. This will kind of bind you two in future years as she thinks back on this time.

I'd add in a few neutrals - cream or lemon maybe? or even a Green? Lay the colours out and see what jumps at you as a great mix :)

I would make it just as she would like it now. Too many colors won't make it "go" with everything. It may not go with her decor forever (Home fashion colors change just like clothing colors change. Ten years ago only the fashion forward or severely stunted would have had green or brown in their homes.) but she will love it now and probably use it forever. I have afghans knit by my aunts that are probably 20-25 years old. They have never matched anything in my house but we love them and use them regularly.

I think that she chooses lovely collors! And when she get bored with them, she might get the afghan painted in the future.. I think brouwn and bleu are lovely.

I understand your dilemma. Here's a baby afghan I made (as a gift) when faced with a similar situation. The mom chose the colors to match the nursery. This afghan is for a girl, and is definitely not girly, but she'll be able to use it for years to come, since they aren't 'baby' colors. Hope this helps!

Could you add one more shade of blue and an off-white? That would look really classic to me.

Really, though, with three colors already you don't need to add anything. She's going to love it.

Oh, it's very pretty! Leave it as is, and I bet she will love it for years to come!

I would do the colors that she likes and play with some samples of crocheted pieces to see how it looks and how to lay out the colors. Include her in it and see what she says!
