I added a few more colors to the Granny Chevron Brites blanket... After the mango I will add grape then watermelon. *mm sounds like fruit salad..**

The Ripple, She is Slow

Jumping on the wave pattern bandwagon, I've been rippling for almost a month, yet it seems like I haven't done much at all. Only 11 colors so far (2 rows per color). I can partially blame the slow progress on how naive I was when I tried to determine how much yarn I would need to make a queen-size blanket. I now have another huge bag of yarn and can finally continue on my way. I'm using Knit Picks shine worsted yarn, which is a cotton/modal blend and is machine washable. Except for the two first rows, which I'm intending to always stick on the end of the bed that you don't really see.

My sister-in-law, Leah - also a rippler here - got me started on the ripple-along. She agreed that the dips in the waves are the best parts. It's just more fun than the rest of the pattern, and I look forward to them. But maybe she was just humoring me...

Hello everyone, thanks for letting me join the madness *smile* My name is Stacey and I have a rippling problem. This is my blanket at about 7 or 8 days. This is all stash yarn. I also spin so there is a lot of my own hand dyed, hand spun yarn in there. What a fun project and a great way to use up those little skeins of yarn.

I'm not a big fan of bright colors so I didn't have anything like that in my stash, and since I want this to be a totally stash project my ripple is more earth tone than rainbow colored. I love watching every one's progress and I can't wait to see all the finished ripples. I'm using a pattern out of the harmony guides 300 Crochet Stitches. I've already spied out a couple of patterns for my next ripples, this thing is addictive!

Ripple Introduction

Hello, my name is Kelly and I thought I'd post a "hello, my name is..." post as I've been lurking for awhile. I've made a ripple afghan before, double stranded with a large hook, but when I saw all the ripples going around the blog community, I wasn't able to hold out very long.

I learned to crochet a few years ago from a dear friend who gifted me with a beautiful multi colored ripple all done in single crochet. Two years ago I learned how to knit and have been very focused on that as it aggravates my carpel tunnel much less than crochet does. Getting back onto the crochet horse was easier than expected and I've greatly enjoyed working on this project.

Project specs: 12 stitch repeat ripple pattern from a stitch dictionary (from what I can tell it's nearly identical to the Soft Waves pattern); Red Heart "Soft" in 12 colors organized in a rainbow way with two shades of each color; H hook; 255 stitches wide or 7 feet (a good foot wider than I was planning)

Thread Ripples (And Update)

I started wondering yesterday afternoon what rippled thread crochet would look like. So, I sat down during Amazing Race last night, and voila! I have a rippled bookmark. I'm trying to decide whether it needs a touch of narrow ribbon through the center two DC rows. This is #10 thread with a size 4 hook.




I've also made some progress with my ripple. It's amazing to watch it grow, and see how it changes as I add a new color. I chose the colors based on a strand of the Flower Power and, of course, that even looked different once it was crocheted in the pattern. But, it all seems to be flowing together now.

Thanks for having me!!! I was so excited when I found you guys! I had made a ripple lapghan about 6 years ago and when I saw all your's ... well, I knew that I had to do another one!

Here's mine from 6 years ago ... made from Paton's Canadiana ... the white stripes have a little bit of sparkle in them, I don't think they're showing up in the picture :(

Now the one that I'm working on now. I had the full collection of KnitPicks Palette yarn for a sweater that I was going to knit .. but I fell out of love with the sweater ... it's perfect for this blanket though!!! Yeah :) Here's where I am!

Ellow. I've been rippling for a while now. Making a matching pair of blankets for my daughters beds. I have made the width of this really short, and shall be bordering it, so the trail down the side of the bed flows down (if that makes sence lol)
Hopefully once these are both done i shall be doing a matching one in blue for my son.
In uk doubleknit is the easiest wool to get hold of so thats what this is :)

Can Ripples Be Square?

Another new rippler here! I started rippling this afghan a few weeks ago as a relaxing break in between more complicated projects. All of the wonderful color combinations I saw on this blog really inspired me to pick up my crochet hook and go at it!


Instead of buying new yarn for the project, some stash-digging revealed a number of half-used balls in blues and greens. Each yarn has a story to tell and reminds me of its original use as I crochet with it. Talk about yarn memory!



So here I am, almost 3 feet into my project and about to run out of odd-balls. Eek! As I see it, I have two solutions: (1) make a small square afghan [3.3’ x 3.3’] to serve as a lap blanket or (2) put the project aside until I use up more blue and green from my regular stash. For option 1, I risk having a too-small afghan; though I am afraid that option 2 will give me a disjoint from color repeats. Suggestions?

Yet another Caron Simply Soft Brites.....

Well I figured out my mistake from my last post.. that will teach me to read a new pattern at night. But I got it figured out! And now have frogged what I started working on.. and started again. I'm now back to where I was before frogging and have added a little bit.

This will be a baby blanket. As I have a horrible problem with starting something so large and then loosing interest. So far it will be part of my stock. A local store owner here in town is re organizing her store and will rent out sections of it. So I may have possible store space where I can sell my creations. I'm so excited about it!!! So this will be something that I'll have up in the shop once it gets going.

I'm also using the Caron Simply Soft. Some BRITES colors and some are not. Colors I'll be using are as follows... Blue Mint *bottom color* Lime Light *2nd color* Iris *3rd* Lemonade *the yellow* Rubine Red, Mango, Grape and Watermelon. And those are also the order in which the colors will go. My husband Chris was my random stripe generator last night. I'm using the Granny Chevron's pattern ( # 190, page 115 ) in Jan Eaton's book, 200 ripple stitches.

I think the pattern is easy enough and the colors bright enough that I should not get bored with this. However I will be starting a new job tomorrow, so hookin time will be limited. But I don't think this one should take too long.. Plus I should have lots of yarn left over for another blanket in this yarn. I may do a regular granny with the leftovers.

**edit to include** Forgot to say that I'm using a G (6/4.25 mm) hook. I really like how the stitches look with this size hook.

Another Intro

Hello everyone! I was in the slew of newbies that joined up this past week. I have made a couple ripple projects before, but I was inspired by the modern color combos and the soft, ripply stripes that seem to be "in" in the blogosphere right now.

I made my first ripple 'ghan for my brother for Christmas in teenage-friendly black/white/grey. I used a double strand of Caron Simply Soft acrylic and a Q-hook.

I also made a ripple shawl for charity last year in Red Heart "Soft" but didn't take a picture. I used this pattern from Lion Brand.

I loved the soft waves in the shawl, so I am using that pattern again. Only I made the foundation chain bigger for a 'ghan sized project. I sorted through my (enomous) stash this weekend to see what I could use. I've only done a few rows so far, but I am looking forward to continuing this relaxing project.

Mistake in the pattern?

For those of you who have Jan's book 200 stitches... could you do me a favor.

On page 115, pattern # 190 Granny Chevrons. I think there is a problem with the pattern. I started using it last night on my BRITES ripple. I love how calming doing granny's can be.. and a granny style ripple is even better! There's just something about 3 dc groups!! Anyways.....lol.......

On row 2: your doing a 3 dc group in one sc... then skipping 2 sc. My problem is right before the first star thing used to mark where you should repeat. 3dc ch3 3dc in next. But if I'm reading the pattern correct... there would be no 2 sc space. Perhaps I am just reading it wrong... but could you all take a quick look at the pattern and let me know what you think.

The picture at top shows that there is a 2 sc space before and after the peak. When I started mine last night thoe, I chained 115 +2. I split up the 2 sc space after the peak and put one before and one after. However I did not end where the pattern says I should. I was at the end of a decrease.

Pattern Question

My ripple pattern says multiples of 12 stitches plus 3. Does that mean multiples of 15, or multiples of 12 plus 3 at the very end of the chain?

I have been gazing at this blog for a week now and decided to join! I think I am going to dash out this week (actually have someone drive me) and pick up the copy of the Jan Eaton book, 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns. I have alot of knitpicks shine worsted in lots of bright colors. Has anyone used this yarn for a ripple?

Soft Waves, Take 2

Hey Ripplers! I just joined the blog, but I've been crocheting for a while now. Ripples are one of my favorites; it was also my grandma's favorite too! Ripples are a big part of my family history and I love making them.

I have that book as well, 200 Ripple Stitches, and I happen to be using the Soft Waves ripple for an afghan I am making for a friend of mine. I started it last Tuesday using a size K crochet hook. I'm over halfway done and it hasn't even been a week. I love the pattern because it goes fast, it looks a bit more contemporary, and, best of all, it doesn't use chains! I am using lavender and light blue as my main colors, then lighter and darker shades of blues and purples from my stash. The effect is very calming and I know my friend will love it. I don't have a pic yet, but I'll post as soon as I do!

Just a quick update!

While I finished the first ripple blanket and it is now being enjoyed by my goddaughter. I couldn't help myself, I went and started another one. This time I am going to keep this for me (or my future children)


This time I am using:
- the Soft Waves pattern from 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns.
Yarn: Patons Canadiana and Patons Decor yarn

(These are the colors of my blanket)
and I am using a size H hook.

I am so addicted to Rippling it is not funny. Its to the point where my knitting is suffering. Any way I back to rippling.

I'm New Here and Loving It!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here on the Ripple Along and looking at your gorgeous afghans in certainly an inspiration, believe me. You do such lovely work and I'm thinking that I'll have to buy Jan Eaton's book to try my hand at some different type ripples.

I posted earlier today but apparently something went 'kaflooey' with my post so I'm giving it one more try and hopefully, this post will take. I would like to crochet a ripple using wool or a wool blend from my stash yarn which is waaay too large. The problem is in choosing a yarn that I have enough of, since I know how much yarn crocheting takes. I would be happy to purchase an acrylic (which I have none of) if I knew what might be very soft and durable, so suggestions are very welcome.

Kudos to all of you for your colorful, lovely crocheted art work! :)

Update

I ripple so much slower than all of you, but I wanted to post a quick update. This is my first ever crochet project and I love it. I used the random stripe generator for the four colors and have been following it religiously.

Peanut butter and grape jelly anyone?

That's what I'm calling this one. The purple looks a lot darker than it is, I think.

I am using Red Heart® Bright & Lofty™ #9956 grape crush & Red Heart® Light & Lofty® #9334 cafe au lait. It'll be a baby/toddler blanket when I'm done.

I'm contemplating on adding some "strawberry jelly" with Heart® Bright & Lofty™ #9945 bikini. What do you think? I can't decide.

A Connecticut Yankee in the Ripple Queen's Court

I am Judy, one of the slew of newbies who joined today. I had been holding off joining until after we got back from Spring Break. Friday night I raided the basement, where I have a voluminous supply of cheap yarn leftover from various projects. I collected, sorted, and came up with this rainbow of colors. The variegated MC yarn is Bernat Nice N' Soft "Flower Power." The remainder is a collection of various worsted-weight acrylics, mostly Red Heart, TMA, and Caron. I did "have" to buy a couple more colors, but, otherwise, I'm using stash. My three year old is acting as my Random Color Selector, and he's been having fun lining up the yarn on the living room floor. I'm using a "J" hook, and the "Ocean Waves" pattern from "7-Day Afghans" by Jean Leinhauser & Rita Weiss.

While I'm a blogger newbie, I've rippled before. This is the afghan on my living room sofa (note that the picture has been compromised by a napping cat).

I was also already working on another ripple, from Carole Prior's "A Year of Baby Afghans." I quite often use worsted-weight baby afghan patterns in adult colors to gift as laphans. This one is for my sister, out of yarn she threw at me after an attempt to knit a sweater out of it. I'm having trouble with the exposure--the colors are dark teal and burgundy.

Yet another Caron Brites

Here is my update on my Ripples...yes, I am making three!!
I have begun a pink/rose/grey one for my youngest daughter who is getting married this August and another for daughter number one ( that can be seen on my blog) & also a Caron Simply Soft Brites one for myself! I just could not resist the *Brites* one after I saw a few on this Ripple-along.
They are growing slowly ( although, if I were only doing one it would be growing at a faster pace).
Having a great time and loving checking in here every day to see everyone's progress.
P.S. that is not a mistake on the Brites, just the way the 'ghan is tossed on the floor leaving a lump!

By way of introduction...

...my name is Molly. I live in Canoga Park, CA and I have just joined the "Ripple Along". I wasn't going to make a ripple afghan or join, for that matter. That is not until I saw the work-in-progress of Oiyi and her Caron Simply Soft Brites ripple. I knew I was done for. So with a nod to her lovely creation, here is the start of mine. I began working on it yesterday and this is what I have accomplished. I started with a chain of 300 and a size H hook. I am using the Wavy Chevrons pattern on page 70 from The Crochet Stitch Bible. I wanted a blanket that would sit at the end of my Queen-size bed and offer a bright accent to a room decorated in whites and off-whites. Well, this sucker hangs over the sides by about a foot on each side! No matter. I can always up-grade to a King.

Retirement Ripple

I've started another ripple for a friend who's retiring. It's the Shades of Coral Ripple from the 200 ripple stitch patterns book by Jan Eaton. I'm using Caron Simply Soft in an 8 row pattern repeat of 2 rows Dark Sage, 1 row Sage, 2 rows Off White, 1 row Sage, and 2 rows Dark Sage. So far only 1 repeat is done.

baby ripples

I'm so excited to be on here! :) Finding this blog inspired me to pick up a ripple that i haven't touched for a little over two years (since my daughter was born). I started it for my DH, and he'd been nagging me about it for about a year now, but i just wasn't feeling it. It was just so big already, and not a very convenient project with a small attention-greedy child attached to my knees ;p But i've been consistently working on it since then so it should be done for him by this winter.

I was also inspired by the soft waves, and having baby blankets due, started one in blues for a friend of mine. Here it is, in progress, and the lovely model checking it out is the older brother of the intended recipient. :) That blanket is now done, and i started on a gender neutral, but still bright and happy, baby blanket inspired by michelle's beautiful afghan.










This is my daughter Molly, the attention-greedy little child i mentioned earlier! She had to help me model the done blanket :p And here is her friend Amelia, who "helped" me crochet on the new blanket for a while last night. :D Sorry for the slightly wonky text and pictures, it's looking completely different in the work area and the preview. More updates to come soon as I start ripples for Molly and Amelia!

New Rippler Here!!!!!

Hi guys!! I love this blanket and plan on starting very soon. I did have a question about the yarn choice. Will Caron's simply soft be good for this blanket? I bought the 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns by Jan Eaton, so I am REALLY trying to narrow it down. THanks for any info you guys can provide. I have only crochet two blankets in my life lol, and it was just single crochet, so I am going to relearn to do this blanket!!!

My ripples

This is the first ripple I ever made. As you can see, one of the edges got a little wonky, but I was nearing the end and did not feel like frogging. I was going to give this as a gift but got attached to it and kept it. It now sits on my comfy chair in my bedroom and I use it while watching tv. I liked making it but got bored with the stripe pattern. My next one will have be a multi colored, vertical stripes.

The next one was my first attempt at a round ripple. I loved making this. It goes so fast and is very fun to make. I was not too happy with the color choice but I am happy with the finished product. It is now one of my grand daughters blankies. She uses it to watch tv on the couch or to cuddle with nana in bed.

Wait Update

Well, good news!
Here's the progress on my Ripple and Wait blanket so far. I think of the colors as being more "savory" than "sweet."

I guess I should be starting a baby blanket ripple soon. Well, one at a time! I still have 7 more loooong months for that. Happy hooking, everyone!

Kristi's Blanket

I mentioned in a previous post that I'm working on two ripple blankets at the moment. Well, the second one that I started is for one of my bestfriends who is getting married in June. I'm making the ripple afghan for her bridal shower, and she has requested that I not post updates on my personal blog so that it's a surprise. I resisted at first, but agreed only to post updates here.

So here is an update.

I have since added six more colours stripes - even the light green - but am too impatient to wait till tomorrow for the sun. So sorry, no photo. I'm running out of ways to take expressive photos of this blanket anyway. I'm so much more stimulated by blankets with multiple colours.

On that note, here's a quick update on my blanket. I added 'sea ice' Patons Shetland Chunky stripes today. This picture is from last weekend after adding orange.

I'm liking it more now - thanks for supporting me in my days of uncertainty.

Slow going update

I can't believe how beautiful everyone's ripples are and how quickly your ripples are growing, I feel like a slacker in comparision.

But I'm feeling like I'm in a groove now and the growth is certainly easier now that I have the pattern memorized and I can see how nice the colors look together. The Pattern is Candi Jensen's "Ripple Effect" from her book "Candy Crochet" using halfdouble crochet an H hook and RH yarn.

I know they all have wave patterns, and for that matter I imagine most good crochet stitch guides would too.

I have about 18 of my 90 inches done, I don't get much time to crochet, but love every minute of it. I have a dark pink and dark green up next, the colors are all a little more mild than expected, but I'm guessing it is the every-third-row of off white that is doing this, but I am pleased so far. I wish I was doing throws so I could do more and play with different colors, but that is what I'll be doing when I finish this. :-)

I just wanted to post quickly and say that I am LOVING watching everyone's ripples come to life. I haven't been able to work on mine for almost 2 weeks, but I'm hoping to get back to it this weekend. I miss working on that big ol' thing. LOL

So, everyone keep up the great work and keep the pictures coming! They are inspiring and keep a lot of us working on our's too!

I ♥ Rippling

Thanks for letting me join in the fun. I love looking at everyones beautiful creations and variety of colors and yarn. Even though I'm past the halfway mark lengthwise on my afghan, I haven't had time to take any new photos. I do have a pic from when it was still a baby so to speak, only a few rows long.



It's crocheted mostly with Red Heart Soft, a wondferfully soft, drapey acrylic. There are also a couple of skeins of unknown origin that I've had around for a long time. I do love the Red Heart Soft, but I have no idea how it'll hold up to washing. That remains to be seen.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, I'm using the Easy Ripple Afghan Pattern. The only thing I did different was to start with a chain 162, but my afghan is still about 55" wide.

And just because I can, here's a picture of a scarf I made for my friend sometime in 2003 or thereabouts.



Keep creating!

one end in sight...

...but the rippling may continue! I finished the baby blankie I was working on near the beginning of this phenomenon, and I am happy with it. The first eight rows or so are sketchy on the ends, and then I finally figured out what I was doing wrong (and too lazy to rip out the mistakes! ah well, the imperfections show that I am a mere human). It's a cheerful little blankie, now awaiting washing and blocking, with a prayer that more softness will come into the thing. I used quite a bit of red heart acrylic, which isn't the best-feeling stuff around, but they do have a lot of fun colors. The rest is cotton of all sorts and a skoosh of cotton/wool blend--a delicious lemony color I couldn't resist. I can't really resist any color under the right circumstances, but you know what I mean.

In the middle of it all, I decided to make a little dishcloth a la ripple, and may continue to make a set of them for a friend who's getting married. Or I might keep the thing and make another, BIGGER, ripple blanket!! Ah, what should I do? It's obvious, isn't it?

It's been ever so lovely seeing everyone's progress, and comforting to know that people around the world are obsessing over a stitch pattern and cozy yarn. There is hope in the world.

Gotta Frog...

Well crum. I'm gonna have to frog but at least I only worked one day on it. I used a single crochet chain instead of a regular chain because the Crochet Stitch Bible told me that it was going to be more stretchy. It was but it was also too tight and made the points of the ripple curl. This time I'll do the chain on a larger hook. Here's my pattern, SusanB's Easy Ripple Afghan

See how the points are curled back on the work? Ugh.

The garnet(curling row), magenta(last row), grape(third row), lavender, green, and a medium and light pink(second row) all go well together. My colors aren't showing well. In real life they aren't as dark and are more vibrant than shown here.

Fantasy Dark Horse Yarns 50% Nylon, 50% Acrylic. YUMMY SOFT!!
I may not use the country blue or the cream, they just don't seem to go.

Nisa's Ripple Update, Day 24

Ripple Specs: size H (5mm) hook, worsted weight New England Highland wool by Harrisville Designs (rose, lady slipper, poppy, tundra, peacock, Bermuda blue, azure), 26 rows, ~60 inches wide (either 183 or 195 ch to start), Soft Waves pattern

I haven't been working much on my ripple until this week when we've been forced to spend more time indoors due to the Nor'easter. Nothing like a good storm to bring out the craftsy side! Anyway, sorry about the low-res pix. These were taken with a cameraphone because my 7 year old dropped my digital camera. *sob*



I noticed that the sides were uneven, but I'm not going to do anything about it. I like to think it adds to the charm. (read: I'm too lazy and surprisingly not perfectionist enough to want to figure out where the problem spots are, frog it, and fix it)



I've grappled quite a bit with the whole design. At one point I didn't like that each stripe was a fixed 2 rows. Then I wished it weren't so wide. At another point, I thought it had too much blue. And at yet another I wished it had something more purple-y. But then I put it on my daughter's bed to try it on for size last night and it was perfect just the way it is. It really seemed to anchor the colours of the room well. Can't wait to have this one finished and the next one too!

yeah, my ripple and i made up, after i frogged a good bit of the start (possible due to one major mistake) and took a lot of the sides (feet deserving of Olympic medals).
now we're back on track, and it's coming out great. the colours are working, and i'm happy doing it, as opposed to miserable before.
i'll keep this short.

Bigger...

Some progress on my ripple. I'm enjoying the variation in the red stripes: there are 2 rows for each colour, but only 1 for the red, which means that it's done in a different direction each time I come to it and pops out on different sides of the blanket each time.

Specs: DK wool ( Elle, I think, and Sirdar for the green/brown) and 4mm hook.
