Hurricane Ripple

Haven't posted to this blog in a LONG time. I call this blanket the Hurrican Blanket because I did almost all of it while evacuated to my parents house during Hurricane Ike.

At first I didn't really like this blanket all that much. I had a "vision" for it and it didn't really work out the way I had planned. I originally planned to put this on my couch, but one cold night I took it into my bedroom and discovered that I love the way it looks in there.



I didn't plan for it to go with the duvet and shams, it was just a happy coincedence. In fact while I was making the ripple I had totally forgotten that I even had that duvet set. We had recently moved and it was still in a box.

So it's finally starting to really grow on me.

Baby Blanket

This is my first post... please be gentle.

I am making a baby blanket for my cousin's first child. She is due in April. We don't know the sex yet, so I have decided to go with a light green/off white combination. I am using Caron Simply Soft and the ribbed variation of SusanB's Easy Ripply Afghan.

This isn't my first ripple, but it's the first time I've used this pattern and I have a question. The bottom is "rolled" up... Will it stay that way? Hm. Anyway, I love the pattern! I just hope I finish on time. (I tend to get distracted and push projects to the side.)

Ocean baby blanket FO

I finished ripple #3 early yesterday morning. I can't wait to give it to her. I talked to her on Monday and it was confirmed that she is having a little boy(which is what the early pink or blue test said). So this is Dylan Scott's first blanket. They are doing an ocean/fish theme, so I have been calling it the ocean blanket. It kinda looks like ocean waves:) It is made with Caron SS, a size G hook, is about 34 by 36 and it took me about a month to crochet. I took me over an hour just to FINISH tucking the ends in:) My mini Dachshund Emory is modeling it again.... She is so funny, I think she enjoys the photo shoots:)

So here are a few pictures of #3. I'm not loving it yet(I think that is a common problems with the multi colored one). I'm hoping that when I get a bit more into it I'll like it more. I keep talking myself out of frogging it. I chained 219(plus a few extra for safety), size G hook, using lots of Caron SS. I've not measured it since it was two rows tall, but it does just slightly hang over my queen size bed. I'm going to just go until I run out of yarn ( if I don't have enough I'll just pick up a few balls at Wal-Mart...although I hope I don't have to)

Ripple #3

So I started #2 and #3. I had to set aside #2(so no pictures yet) because 3 is a baby blanket for a friend that is due in October and I would love to give it to her early. I'm using the Soft Waves pattern, a size G hook and Caron SS. I'm using white and then the brites for the blue and the green. I'm thinking that I will need 12 repeats, so with 4 done I'm a third of the way done.



I'm hoping to be able to blog more often. You can read about why I have been busy at my blog:)

My first ripple-DONE!

I finished it today......Caron Simply Soft in every shade of purple available. I am pretty happy with it. This one will go to my daughter. Now I'm going to start a Halloween granny square afghan I found on line....it is AWESOME. But I have been toying with the idea of making an orange and black Halloween ripple too. Then some Christmas throws...maybe a granny and ripple. I will be crocheting nonstop to the end of the year..........then start all over!

Granny Chevron FINISHED

I have had this finished for several days now, but just haven't gotten around to taking and posting pictures. I've been busy trying to get things done for the shop, buying new yarns *yea!* and working up some quick things to sell. So back to the granny chevron.... the pattern is from the 200 ripple book #190. It is 5 repeats done in Caron Simply soft. Some are brights and some are just the normal. The first set of colors are random, picked by my hubby. The 2nd and 3rd are more planned. A color could only touch another once. Which made each color look different in each section.
I made sure to end it with the teal color, as that was the one I started with, and would also be the border color. I think it helps bring it all together nicely.

Ripple Progress

I haven't posted in a long time, and for good reason. I have been making very slow progress. Here it is, in all it's 22 inch glory. I started with a 243 chain which ended up being 64 inches. Standard twin size (completely on accident). So because of this happy accident, I decided that the length should be 87 inches. I'm only 25% done! However, thanks to everyone here and their newly completed ripples, I now have a second wind. My goal is 50% done by the end of May! I won't bore you with any more details, but if interested, here is my post on my blog.

2nd Ripple

P.S. Since I originally posted this, that ripple is no more. I frogged it all out and started over, and over, and over. Can’t seem to get a color combo I like, so I’m thinking of making one out of a solid color. Now to figure on what color. Maybe it’s not that I have a fear of color, maybe I’m just color challenged!


Finished the 1st, now on to something more colorful...sort of. Try as I will, no matter what I do, it always turns out more subtle. I think I have a fear of color...did you know there really is such a thing? I looked it up, it's called Chromophobia.

After finishing the 1st afghan, my fingers were bored! I put the 200 Ripple Patterns book on hold at the library and when it became available, I found the pics in the book like eye candy. So many colors and patterns!

I commend those of you who are just learning to crochet and are making the Soft Waves pattern. I kept losing my place and making mistakes. I need some "holes" in the ripples to keep me on track.

Sooooo, I'm using "Gary's Ripple" from the book and using an F hook, Caron Simply Soft yarns and some yarn from my stash.

Still loving all the pics you gals provide...many are getting so creative in displaying their art!

Started my ripple for real!

Well, I was originally planning to work on an afghan in the Susan's Easy Ripple Afghan pattern, but from looking at everyone's photos here on the site of their Soft Waves ripples, I decided the other day to order a copy of Jan Eaton's book (which happened to be on sale at the web site I was browsing at the time). And happily (shockingly) it arrived Saturday, so I got started trying to see if I could do it -- here it is next to my Easy Ripple swatch:



Considering that's only the third bit of crocheting I've ever done (and the largest), and I have recently mastered the advanced technique of "actually reading the pattern all the way through before starting," I was feeling pretty slick about it. So I picked up my "real" yarn (which I got about two weeks ago), put on a DVD and started stitching. I chained 219 (216 +3) for a 150 cm wide 'ghan (at least, according to my swatch; we'll see how reality works out). Fortunately, the swatch served to work out pretty much all the kinks I had with the pattern (once I figured out I stopped coming up short of stitches when I actually did the 2 dc at the end of the row...), and so in six rows of afghan crocheted in front of the TV, no major mistakes. Yet. Yay. :)

There's only one problem...



The colors I picked, which I thought would look so nice ... kinda look like I am crocheting Independence Day bunting. (I also have a skein of violet, but I didn't make it that far today.) Yikes. On the bright side, though (?!), I underestimated how much yarn I am going to need. On the Easy Ripple afghan pattern, it said 36 ounces, which is about what I bought. I have 7 6oz skeins, three of which have good-sized dents in them which make me think I'm only going to get 8 to 10 rows per skein. With my gauge, 2 rows measure 2.5 cm or 1 inch (which is really convenient, may I just note), so that's 87.5 cm/35 inches... aka "way too short." So, I guess I need to buy more yarn. Which will let me choose more colors, since I'm not really scared of the color changes anymore. So, at least I can ditch the "crocheted just for the presidential debates!" look, hopefully.

And one amusing side note: I have bad wrists due to both typing professionally and a bad break on one side a few years ago (plus a bad wrench on the other), and so I can really only do certain things for a limited amount of time before they start being painful. It seems that crochet aggravates my hands differently than knitting, so that means -- if my hands get tired of knitting, I can just start crocheting, and vice versa. Hah. I win! :-)

Oh, and just because he snuck into the photo above, apparently using his supernatural knowledge that, somewhere, a picture was being taken (a picture with NO CATS!) - in case you missed him, my cat, Tiger:

He's going to be able to sleep under it tonight.

Stats: Caron Simply Soft (6 oz. skein 315 yds), 13 balls -- 3 each of dark sage, lime, and bright blue, 2 each of dark red and country blue. Size H hook. Pattern: Double Crochet Chevrons from Jan Eaton's Encyclopedia of Crochet Techniques. Finished dimensions: 60" wide by 76" long. I crocheted two rows of each color, and had 65 stripes (so 130 actual rows). I estimate it took about an hour for each color change, and about an ounce of yarn for each.

He really loves it, particularly the lime green and bright blue.

I'm so excited to finish such a big project. I only learned to crochet in March, so this seems like quite an accomplishment. I'm already planning a round baby ripple in a rainbow of Caron Simply Soft Brites for my next one. . .

Granny Chevron progress

Here is the latest picture of my ripple. All the colors are in now.. and I am starting to do the second set of colors. It is all still random except for my small rule, the colors in the 2nd repeat can not touch the same colors from the first. So like on the first repeat of colors, the yellow is next to the dark purple and rubine red... so on the 2nd repeat... the yellow can't touch either of those colors. Then the 3rd repeat can't touch any of the same colors as the 2nd set. And so on. That way the colors look a bit different on each section.

Yet another Caron Simply Soft Brites.....

Well I figured out my mistake from my last post.. that will teach me to read a new pattern at night. But I got it figured out! And now have frogged what I started working on.. and started again. I'm now back to where I was before frogging and have added a little bit.

This will be a baby blanket. As I have a horrible problem with starting something so large and then loosing interest. So far it will be part of my stock. A local store owner here in town is re organizing her store and will rent out sections of it. So I may have possible store space where I can sell my creations. I'm so excited about it!!! So this will be something that I'll have up in the shop once it gets going.

I'm also using the Caron Simply Soft. Some BRITES colors and some are not. Colors I'll be using are as follows... Blue Mint *bottom color* Lime Light *2nd color* Iris *3rd* Lemonade *the yellow* Rubine Red, Mango, Grape and Watermelon. And those are also the order in which the colors will go. My husband Chris was my random stripe generator last night. I'm using the Granny Chevron's pattern ( # 190, page 115 ) in Jan Eaton's book, 200 ripple stitches.

I think the pattern is easy enough and the colors bright enough that I should not get bored with this. However I will be starting a new job tomorrow, so hookin time will be limited. But I don't think this one should take too long.. Plus I should have lots of yarn left over for another blanket in this yarn. I may do a regular granny with the leftovers.

**edit to include** Forgot to say that I'm using a G (6/4.25 mm) hook. I really like how the stitches look with this size hook.

Another Intro

Hello everyone! I was in the slew of newbies that joined up this past week. I have made a couple ripple projects before, but I was inspired by the modern color combos and the soft, ripply stripes that seem to be "in" in the blogosphere right now.

I made my first ripple 'ghan for my brother for Christmas in teenage-friendly black/white/grey. I used a double strand of Caron Simply Soft acrylic and a Q-hook.

I also made a ripple shawl for charity last year in Red Heart "Soft" but didn't take a picture. I used this pattern from Lion Brand.

I loved the soft waves in the shawl, so I am using that pattern again. Only I made the foundation chain bigger for a 'ghan sized project. I sorted through my (enomous) stash this weekend to see what I could use. I've only done a few rows so far, but I am looking forward to continuing this relaxing project.

Retirement Ripple

I've started another ripple for a friend who's retiring. It's the Shades of Coral Ripple from the 200 ripple stitch patterns book by Jan Eaton. I'm using Caron Simply Soft in an 8 row pattern repeat of 2 rows Dark Sage, 1 row Sage, 2 rows Off White, 1 row Sage, and 2 rows Dark Sage. So far only 1 repeat is done.

My name is Lynne and I'm also new to this blog... well to blogging in general. Yes, I'm a newbie!

I have also been watching everyone's progress for a few weeks now and love all of the beautiful blankets. You have inspired me to start my very first ripple. :)

The only problem? I'm on a yarn diet. I was not going to buy more yarn until I complete some of my current projects (or those just waiting to be started!) but a friend invited me to go shopping in the States (I live in Canada, near the border) and I found the Caron Simply Soft I see so often on blogs. I haven't been able to find it here. Well, I just had to buy it :)

Specs :

Soft Waves pattern from Jan Eaton
yarn : Caron Simply Soft Brites in Berry, Blue Mint, Limelight, Grape, Mango, Lemonade as well as Iris and Rubine Red (Still Simply Soft but not Brites)
I'm making baby blanket size so I chained 111 (?) to start.

So here was my first go at it :











It looked good at first but then realized it wasn't rippling :





It took me many tries to get it right. I've been a knitter for years and learnt how to crochet, mostly on my own, 2 years ago. I guess I need more practice with reading patterns!





Finally I got it right and it now looks like this :





I've never made such a flashy colourful.. well... anything! I love it!

Newbie

Hello everyone, This is my first post. It is so great to see all of the ripples and to see them grow. So many pretty afghans. Here is my blanket on day 10.



I think I will need to do 9 repeats of the four colours. So I am almost a third of the way done. I am using Red Heart Super Saver, a size I hook and the Soft Ripple pattern and while I love the colours and how it is turning out I really not in love with the yarn. So what is a knitter/crocheter to do? Buy more yarn right? So I have almost enough now for a second ripple in Caron Simply Soft. I'm going to add a few colours to it every time I go to the craft store so that when I'm done with the one I'm working on, I'll be set for a second. Is there anything that I can do when it's done that will soften this yarn? I was thinking that I would try to use softener on it but I've never used this yarn before so I didn't know if it would work?
Anyway, here it is on our bed last week(of course it has grown since then:)

It matches better in person.
Can't wait to see more ripples. Am I the only person that checks this blog a billion times a day?

I thought I should stop by since I haven't updated in a while. I am still plugging along on my blanket. I am so close to finishing, but I keep getting side tracked by other projects.

I finished it !!!!!

I have completed my Ripple. In my push to finish it over the weekend I overdid it. Now my hands are achy, my knuckles swollen, my tendonitis acting up, and the circulation not too good. I'll rest them for a few days and they'll recover.

Here are the stats...

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Brites in Lemonade, Limelight, Blue Mint, Berry Blue, Grape, Watermelon, Papaya, and Mango.

Hook: Size H real cool wooden hook, Ebony or Rosewood

Size: 48" wide and 63" high

Pattern: Malibu Ripple from 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns

Color Sequence: designed by my friend Dianna. All eight colors in sequence for a total of four repeats.

Green/Blue

I'm making some progress. I've done 15 rows out of 60-80, so it's a nice start. I won't post again until I'm finished because I don't think it's going to look any different -- my colors are limited.

I'm using Caron Simply Soft, G hook. I tried using the Bone color and ripped it out, because it looked out of place. Ds loves the lime and bright blue and says he can live with the red. He wants to redecorate his room with a jungle theme, so this will fit right in. This is the Double Crochet Chevron pattern from Jan Eaton's Encyclopedia of Crochet.
