Nisa's Ripple Half-Blanket Done!

ripple0910b

It's done! I actually fastened off and weaved (wove?) the edges in long ago, but just never got around to posting the pics. I decided not to make a full-size twin blanket because:
  1. It was eating up so much yarn that you know, when you go to a yarn store, you can't just buy one skein or one kind of yarn and so I was afraid we'd go bankrupt trying to support my yarn habit. And I still had to make another one for my youngest!
  2. I had a feeling that my eldest, for whom the blanket was intended, might not quite take to it the way I had wanted her to.
  3. I got bored of it. :D

This is how it looks going vertically on the bed. I don't like the way it looks this way, but at least it's long enough so that if she does ever use it, it'll cover a good part of her body.

I was supposed to make another for my youngest, and I did start it, but soon after we found out that she's got a dust mite allergy (among other things) and well, non-machine-washable wool blankets just were not a practical choice for their room. My eldest initially complained of it being too itchy, but now she'll at least keep it on her bed.

Now I have a whole bunch of this yarn left over so I've decided to try my hand at that Larger Than Life bag that's been making a bit of a splash these days.

Anyway, thanks all, it's been fun!

Nisa's Ripple Update, Day 24

Ripple, Day 24
Ripple Specs: size H (5mm) hook, worsted weight New England Highland wool by Harrisville Designs (rose, lady slipper, poppy, tundra, peacock, Bermuda blue, azure), 26 rows, ~60 inches wide (either 183 or 195 ch to start), Soft Waves pattern

I haven't been working much on my ripple until this week when we've been forced to spend more time indoors due to the Nor'easter. Nothing like a good storm to bring out the craftsy side! Anyway, sorry about the low-res pix. These were taken with a cameraphone because my 7 year old dropped my digital camera. *sob*

Ripple, Day 24 - side

I noticed that the sides were uneven, but I'm not going to do anything about it. I like to think it adds to the charm. (read: I'm too lazy and surprisingly not perfectionist enough to want to figure out where the problem spots are, frog it, and fix it)

Emma, Day 81/365 and Ripple, Day 24

I've grappled quite a bit with the whole design. At one point I didn't like that each stripe was a fixed 2 rows. Then I wished it weren't so wide. At another point, I thought it had too much blue. And at yet another I wished it had something more purple-y. But then I put it on my daughter's bed to try it on for size last night and it was perfect just the way it is. It really seemed to anchor the colours of the room well. Can't wait to have this one finished and the next one too!

Nisa's Happy Ripples - Day 5

Ripple, Day 5 - happy colours
specs: H (US5) hook, 2-ply worsted weight wool,
New England Highland by Harrisville Designs

I'm on day 5 of rippling now. I haven't been able to work on the blanket as much as I'd like to. I had to run out today and get 4 more hanks of wool in the colours I'll be using most. I've decided to use only 1 shade of green in the blanket because the other greens were either too dark or too olive-y for the girls' room. The blanket is wider than I had estimated it to be for a twin-sized bed - it's 60" long (I'll edit this post later after I count how many stitches I made the chain). It could probably have been a couple inches narrower and still had some room to drape over the sides of the bed.

Ripple, Day 5 - flowing like a river

I thought everyone was nuts when they waxed all poetic over rippling, but now I'm a believer. I love this project.

Yummy Yarn

I'm Nisa from New England and I've decided to jump onto this Rippling bandwagon! I'm hoping that blogging about it here will keep me going so I can actually finish what I've started. And not only that, I plan on making 2 of these - one for each of my girls!

Here's a shot of the wool I'm using - it's all New England Highland worsted weight wool from Harrisville Designs which I'm lucky enough to have practically in my backyard. They have some seriously gorgeous colours there. It was difficult not to walk away with all of them! I only wish the wool were a little softer! I'd like the blankets to be big enough to cover the girls' beds, but the cost may end up being prohibitive. I'm making it as least as wide as I need it and I'll see how far I get up, lol.

I've started with the dark berry colour and my plan is to let the ripples dictate the order of the colours. I'm also using the ever-popular Soft Waves pattern. I'll post more when I make a little more progress with my blanket. Right now I'm only 5 dc in on the first row, lol!
