Ripplin' Along

Today I finished the first third of the ripple blanket for Math Guy~~that's 17 stripes (3 rows each stripe). It is approximately 55 inches wide and 25 inches long. I should wind up with a blanket about 75 inches in length. I've enjoyed working on it so far and will likely remain fairly monogamous until it is finished. What a fun project! I couldn't wait to get to the end of the first 17 rows so I could start the colors over again to see how they worked up this time. My son seems to like it~~he even suggested I make his girlfriend one for her graduation, so she could take it to school with her. Hmmm.....let's see how this one goes first. If I do make one for her, it won't be out of wool, but I could handle some Simply Soft or Red Heart Soft (but I don't think any of our local stores carry it.) Something to keep in mind, though.

ETA: I'm using Cascade 220 Superwash for this 'ghan. If you hurry, WEBS still has it on sale until the 25th of May.

Frogged, it's all frogged

Well, this is what it used to look like:
But now it's all gone. All gone.

I found that the queen size width was too much for my large loose stitch compounded by the "textured" effect caused by picking up only the back half of the stitch on every second row. Love the look, but the structure was too weak and stretchy.

So tonight I spent HOURS (I could not believe how long it took!) pulling it all apart. I'll try a smaller ghan with a smaller hook and a tighter stitch. I'm gonna forget the textured stripe too.

Hopefully it'll work out this time.

An Update

I've been knitting and crocheting, working on both a wedding present (the knitting) and baby present (le' ripple). Here's the ripply progress as of last week.

Newbie!

Hello all. Well....I'm new to making Ripple Afghans, and so far it's been very fun.. this was the start of it... let me knoqw what u think

Bacon Ripples?

Must see ripple treasure hunt site of the day:

TWiNKiE CHAN!

Hunt down the bacon and eggs scarf. Yep, I kid you not. So fabulous. The most innovative use of ripples I have seen to date.

I once again have been a lax Ripple Mistress, but there's been chaos on the home front lately that I won't pain you with, you can hunt through my blog if you really want to know why I now jump at slight noises and can't seem to sleep.

Am still working on the site improvements. They should roll in gradually, so keep those peepers peeped!

Happy rippling all!

Ripple Foursome

I'm making steady progress on my ripple blanket and really enjoying the work as well. I've been into making these picture groupings lately, so you'll have to forgive the use of a cheesy technique. I took these picture on my porch where I have this wonderfully weathered teak bench. I like the way the slats of the bench mirror the lines of the ripple.

Ripples in unexpected place

I thought I'd share the ripple love with the unsuspecting public, so I took a wee ripple down to the river and stitched it to a railing. Now I'm wondering what will happen to it... all alone out there in the world! :-)

Its scary, but its a ripple!

Ok, definitely NOT my first choice for colors OR yarn, but....you work with what you've got right? ;) In the meantime, I'll just burn my retinas looking at it :)

This crazy blanket started off with the idea of making a scarf for my husband for Christmas. He's a hawkeye fan, thus the black/white/gold. Tried knitting about 4 different patterns, frogged 4 different scarves, hating them all. Then decided to make it into granny squares, and make a blanket....hated those too. Just didn't look right.
So...balled it all up and stuck it back in the closet until finally one day thought "hmm...might as well use it as a practice ripple" since I still can't make up my mind on what yarn I want to use for my "real" ripple. So I decided to make it into a blanket for my son - who is 2 1/2 and thinks the colors are just fantastic ;)

Its about half done, and when I took the pictures yesterday it was *about* 32" long and 45" wide. Guesstimate ;) I'll have to actually sit down and measure soon.

So that's where I'm at for now! I'll post when its finished.
(red heart acrylic yarn, 5mm hook, softwaves pattern)

Out of yarn - again

So this is how far I got this time...

The three balls of white yarn from eBay arrived, but the rest hasn't yet, so now I'm stuck again and suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

Novice Questions

Hi there, I'm new to this blog and new to crochet. I tried to get started on my Soft Waves (from the 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns book) ripple blanket yesterday and I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. I have a couple of questions...

1. The pattern says that you should start with a foundation chain of 12 + 3 chains. I'm using 195, but I'm not sure if I should count the one on my hook. I don't think that I should, but I just thought I'd ask the experts for clarification.

2. The pattern also says that you should end row 1 with 2dc into the last ch. If my math is correct, you should only have enough chains for this to be the first of [2dc into the next ch] twice. Am I right about this?

I think I'm having trouble starting with the right number of chains. Who knew that it was so hard to count to 195.

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints

Still Rippling :)

and loving every second of it!

Here's my ripple ... almost twice through the 30 colors of Knitpicks Palette yarn :)

~*~ Happy Rippling ~*~

How to proceed from here

Hello, you lovely ripplers. I wish I had time to comment on all your beauties , but let me just tell you that they are all such an inspiration (I can't wait to start my next blanket!)

Anyway, I am halfway with my blanket, i.e. I've run out of yarn. I guess that will teach me not to buy my yarn in another country, eh?! So now I have to wait for my mum to send me some more.

But now I'm considering how to proceed with the blanket. My plan, at first, was to continue with the pattern I've been doing for the first half: first 2 rows in one colour, then 2 rows in two different colours, continuing through my seven colours. But since I haven't got enough of the first blue colour to make two rows, that would put an end to the crocheting until I get some more yarn.

However, I have been thinking that I'll probably do it in reverse order from the middle to the other side. That means that I can keep on hookin' for a little while yet. Which is good, 'cause, let's face it, how long can I go without crocheting?!

But now I'm kinda thinking that instead of jumping straight on the reverse order thing, I might do a middle section. I'm just not quite sure what to do... So any input would be appreciated!

Also, because the blanket isn't quite long enough, I'm going to add some kind of edging to the sides, preferably something similar to the ripples in the blanket itself. I'm just not sure how to go about this. Would I just do it the same that I've been doing the ripples?

A wee ripple...

I have never really crocheted, but really want to learn and hence have started learning all the names of the stitches, to progress on to reading a pattern...

I have started small and hope to get a wee hand towel for my down stairs loo at the end of my efforts. I suppose I will be creating loads of little face cloths etc over the months until I get to grips with my new project.

Eventually I'll progress to a big woollen ripple... I have been admiring all the wonderful ripples on loads of different websites over the last 4-6 months and just couldn't resist trying to work out the pattern myself. It's rippling all right, but the edges more so than I was hoping!
Oh well, there's one way to learn, and that's practice, practice, practice!

In the meantime I'll watch all your wonderful blankets grow into huge beautiful works of art!
Well, I finally got a chance to pick up my ripple afghan this week. It is now 30 and 1/2 inches long. I'm still a little indecisive about how big I want to make it. I originally wanted to make into a bedspread, but I didn't take into consideration how much it would shrink when I started the ripples so it shrunk ALOT.

Finished another ripple

I finished another ripple. My first one was in fingering weight yarn and huge, this one was worsted weight (Red Heart) and more lap sized. Here it is:

I think it turned out nice, and is now my cat Guinevere's favorite nap spots. Because of that napping, I have decided not to wash it (soften it up) until just before the gifting.

I am onto another crocheted afghan anon ripple type. If you want to see photos of that and some other projects just meet me over at my main blog.

Peace!
Susan (aka ZenKnit)

rippling along...

Well I took a short ripple break this week, but I'm back at it now.
I was able to find some "Tangerine" in the Red Heart Soft. With the addition of that and some more white, I think the blanket is coming along nicely. Though, I am rather tempted to keep adding new colors from my stash, but I know it will look all wonky if I start adding now. Next time!

Finished Ripple!

I finished it! this is a ripple prayer shawl for a friend of mine spending some time in Germany just because she can! i think she is going to really like it. the specs:

Yarn:
-red - red heart soft, wine, about 4 balls
-blue - Bernat Satin, admiral, about 2 balls

Pattern: Ripple Effect from Candi Jansen's Candy Blankies: Cuddly Crochet for Babies & Toddlers

Measurements: about 24" x 64"

Hook Size: I

i have to say that i am really glad that this one is done, but just like many others here i have plans for another one eventually. i have the yarn but want to do a few other projects first! i'll post pics when i get it started!

Ripple onward!

p.s. here is a small ripple prayer shalw perhaps for a baby. it started out as a baby blanket then i realized that i hated my color combination so instead of frogging it i put a border on it and called it a baby shawl! i think it works.

Ripple II : Son of Ripple

Did any of you guys go through a period of mourning when your ripple was finished? I couldn't stop thinking about rippling. I kept finding myself imagining crocheting the next row. Then I would remember that it was All Over and feel sad. I had serious Crochet Angst. So, meet S.O.P. - Son of Ripple...ripple two
After several weeks of grooving on hot pink and red together (a la the edging on my first ripple), I knew that was where this one had to go. Pink to red and then maybe (haven't decided yet) a row of chocolate brown or periwinkle blue. I plan to make little red pom poms to attach to the points of each edge. I love red pom poms nearly as much as red ric rac and red buttons!
I wonder how far I'll get through this one before I start dreaming of Ripple III : The Next Generation??

ps If you like vintage findings, check out these cool buckles I found a couple of days ago.

Ripples On The Brain

Since I haven't yet purchased yarn for my next afghan, I was playing around with what I have. I'd really like to use this yarn for my next afghan, but I don't have enough. It's a discontinued yarn, so I'll see if I can get some more, but in the meantime I started a Ripple Scarf. I may rip it out if I can get the enough of the same colors to make an afghan. I'm using pink, chocolate and vanilla. Reminds me of Neapolitan ice cream.

For those of you who want to ripple and an afghan seems daunting, or you just don't have enough yarn at the moment, why not try this scarf? I've modified the Easy Ripple Afghan pattern to accomodate scarf width. Please note, this is in no way a new pattern, nor am I taking credit for it. It is simply a modification of the Easy Ripple Afghan by Suan B sized down in width. I'm using Laines Du Nord Giunco and a G hook. The scarf is about 6 1/2 inches wide.

**Post edited at this point by the Head Ripple Mistress at the request of Susan B, designer of the Easy Ripple Afghan, removing pattern details.**

the best view in town?

I doubt there are any ripples with better view than these.

On Monteliusvägen (a nice walk with a stunning view of Stockholm, located in Södermalm, Stockholm, Sweden).

PICT0023.JPG

This one is made with single crochet (hence the slightly more steep ripples) in the back loops (for extra flewibility).

The view looks like this in daylight, and like this by night.
