I just started "soft waves" from the Eaton book, and at the start of row two, it says "ch3, 1dc into same st"... what same st? the one at the end of the first row? the last of the ch3? help!

It's the same stitch as the one right below your new chain 3.
Technically with double crochet, your first chain 3 at the beginning of a row counts as a double crochet so you would skip that first space.
In this pattern, however, you want to work a double crochet in that same space, so that you have what counts as two double crochets in the same stitch.
Good luck. I've seen some mighty nice afghans from the pattern you are using. The soft waves pattern is the only one I wanted from that book, so I'm just waiting for the library to get it in. I already have 40 Ripple Afghans and 101 Ripple patterns. It's not that I don't want the book, but that I already have too many craft books!
Hello, I just got here. I have no idea what you're talking about but I intend to find out! Thankfully your other readers seem far better informed! Lovely blog. t.x
If you have tried to visit my blog and were given a message that it could not be viewed with Internet Explorer, I believe we may have fixed the problem. Please visit me and leave a note if you can get there again to let us know it is now working. I have no idea what happened but I have not blocked anyone from my blog, just a glitch we hope is fixed now. Thank you.
It's a yarn thing. It's a crochet thing. It's sometimes a knit thing too. It's a getting back to the basics thing. It's the discovery of a mindless, escapist, reassuringly repetitive thing. It's a reveling in tradition, let it sooth your soul thing.

Hope that helps!
Not good wording in that pattern, but I take it be just the same as kounting sheep.
You look like the Ripple Queen! Blog walking this am, thought I'd pop in and say hi.
Welcome mats always out, do stop in.
Have a great day
Sandy
thanks!

Love your ripple blankets. A few have been popping up on quilting blogs I visit. Looks like I need to add something to my "to-do" list. :)
