Reworking the blog

Hey all!

Now that I have a few projects off my plate, I'm thinking about taking a few minutes to rework the blog a bit. The sidebar is getting a bit unwieldy now that we have almost 175 ripplers. Here's what I'm thinking:

Make the members list it's own seperate page. I'd make a single post that links to everyone's profile and update it as we go. Since many of you don't have your main blog on Blogger, I would be happy to link to them as well if you get me the info. Then there would be one little section in the sidebar labeled "click here for the ripplers" or some such, and it would take you to a list on another page.

We need to clean up the labels. Labels are the things that basically let you sort through all of the blog posts by category. When you write a post, at the bottom right corner of the box, there is a blank for labels...put your tag in here and we can track the progress of your project by clicking on it as all of the posts you have written will come up. You could find all of my posts by clicking on the label that is my name. We're kind of awash, but I'm thinking for the purposes of this blog, limiting it to individuals and type of ripple might help?

I'll be adding a link section to online patterns. There's a label for posts with pattern links, but it seems pretty confusing to most. I'll break it out, perhaps with it's own page like the rippler list.

Old posts will be cached daily. We're a tad too prolific to keep it monthly...

Anything else you think would be helpful? You just let me know.

(pics of my blankets in a bit...have a soft waves round ripple working up quite nicely. takes a bit of fudging on the decreases, but i'm quite happy with it.)

I love all of those ideas! They would all help streamline the blog.

I'm on a dial up connection and some days it can take at least 5 minutes for the blog to load because of the heavy content. Which means I can't check in as often as I would love too.

I think it would be great! I say go for it and it will be easier for everyone to get around on the blog.

Thank you for doing what you do. I know what it takes as I run 2 groups online plus my blog.

Kudos!!

What about drop-down menus for the categories/tags and the ripplers? Don't have to go from page to page - everything is still there, just in more compact form.

I think they are all great ideas--I especially like that people could link directly to their blogs rather than to their profiles if you give "ripplers" their own page. It would take out the step of clicking on people's profile and then finding their individual blogger or other platform blog.

I'd like to join in the Ripple Along--hopefully my yarn is on its way. I sent an email last week, but haven't heard anything. Should I resend?

good ideas!

I think a runing list of ripple patterns would be great on it's own page. It was hard to find them when I first joined.

Also, maybe we could have a gallery of finished ripples on it's own page? I know there is the Flickr group, but it might be nice to see the FO all together.

Sounds like some great ideas. Is there any option to provide a search mechanism too?

Good idea, Dawn. I've taken to only labelling mine as JENNI-RAIE. And I'd love to link my regular blog to the list thing. I have a headache so my words don't work right.

I'll keep my eye open for when you want the URL.

Those are all great ideas. They also sound like lots of work - thanks, Dawn for everything you are doing!!
I especially like the sound of the direct links to blogs.

Dawn: I've seen some blogs that show the most recent comments (so that, if someone posts a comment on an article from a week ago, it becomes visible, rather than disappearing into the archive abyss). Do you have the capability to do something like that?
