Yarn Suggestions?

I hope this is ok to post, if not delete away ;)

I'm dying to start on my ripple....but trying to decide what yarn to use. What have you used? What do you like?

I want something reasonably priced (aka, I need to be able to afford to finish it! LOL) But nice, easy to care for, etc. And I want something with a LOT of color options ;) I think I'm going to have to order online, bc colors are more limited locally than I'd realized. So what do you use?

Thanks for asking I'm very interested also.Haven't joined the ripple along.I'm still trying to get a swatch correct. Been crocheting and frogging, crocheting and frogging.

But yes, I'm sure there are a lot of lurkers wondering about yarns.

I'm using mostly leftover worsted weight Red Heart from the days before I discovered "good" yarn. There's also a smattering of worsted weight cotton and one stripe of leftover boucle. Red Heart's cheap, comes in a million colors, and you can wash it. This is a stash-buster project for me, so I never intended it to be an heirloom or anything (in which case I definitely would not use Red Heart).

Someone mentioned the other day that Elann.com has some Rowan Pure Wool DK in now at 40% off. That's what the original Yarnstorm ripple was out of, and she said her blanket used about 1000 g. to finish. It's superwash and comes in a huge range of colors (although Elann only has about half of them at the moment.

I'm using Rowan Pure Wool DK and while it is a very nice superwash wool, I probably would have used a synthetic blend if I had thought about it more before starting because getting the yarn I need has been pricey. I think I would have used TLC Cotton Plus and Lion Cotton Ease if I had been thinking more clearly - they're both cotton/acrylic blends and between the two, there is a decent selection of colors I think. I've also seen some nice afghans done in Caron Simply Soft which is the nicest acrylic yarn out there in my opinion.

yeah, I have pretty much cheapo yarn in my ripple--red heart soft is my favorite inexpensive yarn, washable but really soft. red heart in general usually has the widest color selection. another good pick is sugar n cream cotton--cheap, lots of colors, but it's cotton so less scratchy than acrylic. gets softer the more times you wash it. good luck!

I'm one of the ripplers using Caron Simply Soft, one of my favorite acrylic yarns. There are lots of colors to choose from, and the palette works together really well. It is a light worsted, and it might not hold up well if the afghan were going to get a lot of use, but I know mine will have an easy life. And best of all, it is inexpensive. So I would say that budget and how your afghan will be used are important considerations when choosing yarn.

I just discovered Red Heart's Soft Yarn, which is a much softer acryclic than the usual. I can't believe I just bought two big bags of acrylic... after swearing it off!

Alas, I craft partly because I'm thrifty. Sigh. Maybe one day when I have more of a wool and "good" stash.
